All,

There are so many lab fires resulting from spent hydrogenation catalysts that it is worth informing this group of some important recent publications.

  1. A recent JCHAS article nicely covers the hazards of hydrogenations, but does not have the quenching details from #3 below.  “Hazards associated with laboratory scale hydrogenations”   Tilak Chandra and Jeffrey P. Zebrows.  http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jchas.2015.10.019
  2. Another recent paper addresses Raney catalysts and recommends a quench that should be applicable to Raney nickel.   “Playing with Fire? A Safe and Effective Deactivation of Raney Cobalt using Aqueous Sodium Nitrate” John Jin Lim,* Frank Dixon, Jr., et al.  https://dx.doi.org/10.1021/acs.oprd.0c00053
  3. The most important, in my view, is a recent paper that clearly works out the hazards and best practices for Pd/C.  They determined that self-ignition was only observed with alcoholic solvents and developed a specific quench protocol.   “Influence of Solvents and Additives on the Pyrophoricity of Palladium on Carbon Catalyst after Hydrogenation”. Christine Fannes,* Stef Verbruggen, Bart Janssen, and Brecht Egle,   Org. Process Res. Dev. 2021, 25, 2438−2441.

Best, Craig

Subject: [DCHAS-L] FW: SOP's for Massing Raney Nickel and Filtering Spent Pd/C

Hi All,

Does anyone have SOPs for handling spent catalysts? If so, could you please share the information with Dr. Suits (cced)

Thank you

Great to see many of you at the ACS meeting!

Imke

Subject: SOP's for Massing Raney Nickel and Filtering Spent Pd/C

Hi Dr. Schroeder,

Does the "Center for Lab Safety" have SOP's for Massing Raney Nickel and Filtering Spent Pd/C.  I coordinate the Chemical Technology Program at CCRI and we train chemical lab technicians to work in the industry.  I would like to demonstrate the proper technique for massing out 20 mg of Raney Nickel and filtering off spent Pd/C from a reaction mixture that uses Methanol as the solvent.  Any help that you may provide will be greatly appreciated.

Best,

Prof. Wayne Suits, Coordinator Chemical Technology, CCRI
