Steve,
Testing novel compounds in animals is common, but as you say, the toxicological properties of the compounds (drugs) may not be fully assessed at the time. So a key question could be: what are the hazards of the animal feces, urine and bedding?
This was examined with tamoxifen and bromodeoxyuridine and it was found that the compounds were essentially fully metabolized within 72 hours. This is only one study, but is an approach.
The research was done by Nancy Wayne through the Center for Laboratory Safety:
“Exposure assessment of laboratory workers to hazardous waste from mice treated with tamoxifen and bromodeoxyuridine” Journal of Chemical Health and Safety

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Novel Compounds in Animal Research
Hello everyone,
How are other groups evaluating the safety requirements for the use of novel compounds in animal research? Our primary concern is that researchers are conducting animal studies with compounds that do not have safety data. Thus, the toxicity of the compound and/or its metabolites are unknown, and it unclear what is required to safely work with the treated animals and what to do if someone is exposed.
Does anyone have access to relevant expertise to assist with developing a policy for the safe use of novel compounds in animal research?
Any info or help is much appreciated!
Thank you,
Steve
