Demystify:

The laser safety standards have long ago removed the requirement for a baseline eye exam, leaving it as an option.  If the laser beam can exit the equipment, then blocking of all surfaces that are highly reflective at the wavelengths use by the laser is highly desirable to avoid hazardous reflections.

We use Raman in the field when encountering unknowns. This would give them valuable experience when students are employed.

All chemists have received an eye exam for baseline. We also conduct annual laser training as per OSHA/ANSI.

Greetings,

I am seeking advice first as to the safety of having undergraduate chemistry students work with a Raman spectrometer. They would of course be supervised. The vendor requires that the buyer sign a document acknowledging the hazards of laser work. The document recommends that anyone using the instrument have a vision exam first and remove jewelry. Is there any advice on how to influence the administration that this is a safe activity for our students?  Thank you.

Best,

Ruth Ann
