Hi Ruth Ann:
I suggest, if you have not already done so to contact your university laser safety officer, they maybe able to provide you with guidance on the safe use of this Raman system.
If your institution does not have a LSO and there are class 3B or greater systems your EHS office needs appoint a LSO or at an minimum a laser safety program.
I have in a past life taught and directed students in the use of unconfined laser operations including open beam Raman, and it can be challenging to say the least.
I will pass you message along to the LSO list server group to see if any have suggestions that may be of assistance to you.

Greetings,
I am seeking advice first as to the safety of having undergraduate chemistry students work with a Raman spectrometer. They would of course be supervised. The vendor requires that the buyer sign a document acknowledging the hazards of laser
work. The document recommends that anyone using the instrument have a vision exam first and remove jewelry. Is there any advice on how to influence the administration that this is a safe activity for our students? Thank you.
Best,
Ruth Ann
