Demystify:
Patricia,

ANSI standards are to flush weekly; our regulators have indicated they are satisfied with flushing monthly.

For flushing times I've seen suggestions from 30 seconds to 5 minutes. When asked, I usually suggest "until the water runs clear plus 30 seconds" or 2 minutes, whichever is longer.

If you want to be more scientific, determine the "dead leg" of the piping back to the supply line and the piping diameter and use an online calculator to determine the volume in a dead leg.

For example, a 50 foot leg of 3/4 in pipe is 1.2 gallons.  If your eyewash is running at 0.4 gal/min (the ANSI standard) it would take ca. 3 minutes to flush the line. (which means 2 minutes for a "standard flush" might be on the short side).

Hello,

We want to start flushing our eyewash stations to keep the stagnant water from growing microbes. How often is it necessary to do to keep microbes from growing and for what duration should the eyewashes be flushed? Please feel free to e-mail me directly. I am sure this is something that has been discussed before I joined. No need to clutter up the listserv. Also, is there an archives I can search for the listserv to check if a subject has already been addressed? If so, how do I access it?

Thank you,
