Demystify:

Dear CHAS Colleagues,

Thank you to everyone who responded to our survey about CHAS Chats and CHAS Communities. I’ve summarized the results here. This information is incredibly helpful as we schedule CHAS Chats and develop CHAS Communities.

CHAS Chats

As a reminder, CHAS Chats are virtual discussions where a facilitator provides a short overview of the topic and the participants have an open dialogue with each other. They are not the same as webinars, where there are formal presentations followed by a short question and answer session.

The top 10 CHAS Chat Topics, in order, were:

  • Influencing Safety Culture
  • Emerging Issues in Occupational Health and Safety
  • Integrating Risk Assessment in Training and Education
  • Physical Hazards in the Lab
  • Approaches to Safety Inspections
  • Best Practices in Creating and Delivering Safety Moments
  • Glove Selection: Principles, Products, and Data Sources
  • Approaches to Managing Concerns about Reproductive Hazards
  • Diversity and Inclusion in Laboratories and Chemical Safety
  • Nanotech Safety

In addition, several people wrote in Noise, Ergonomics, and Laser Safety as an additional topic.

A few people offered to facilitate some of these sessions, but it’s not too late to volunteer by sending an email to me at rmizzo**At_Symbol_Here**princeton.edu.

CHAS Communities

As an addition to our outreach to all of CHAS, CHAS Communities are groups of individuals with shared responsibilities or interests who will periodically meet virtually to discuss emerging issues and shared concerns.

The CHAS Communities with the most interest were:

  • Academic Research
  • Embedded Safety Professionals
  • Chemical Educators
  • Small Colleges or Primarily Undergraduate Institutions
  • Two-Year Community Colleges
  • Field Research
  • Industrial R&D Laboratories

We already have a small group interested in Two-Year Community Colleges, so that will be one of the first we create. A few people offered to lead CHAS Communities, but there is still an opportunity to volunteer by sending an email to me at rmizzo**At_Symbol_Here**princeton.edu.

Stay Tuned

Keep an eye out for information about scheduled CHAS Chats and initial Zoom meetings with CHAS Communities. If you have question or ideas, please contact me directly at rmizzo**At_Symbol_Here**princeton.edu.

Get Your CHAS Pin

If you are in San Francisco for the ACS Fall meeting next week, please join us or stop by the CHAS Business Meeting (11:45 to 1:45 pm at the Hilton Parc 55 Cyril Mangin Room #1), CHAS symposia or our table at the Sci-Mix to get your brand-new CHAS pin.
