Dear Division of Chemical Health & Safety—

CHAS and the ACS Committee on Ethics give a recognition award to graduating seniors in the chemical sciences & engineering who have demonstrated excellence where chemical health & safety and ethics intersect. Nominations are now open for the 2024 award year; please see the announcement below. One award is made per institution, and each institution is allowed to nominate one student. Should you know of an institution that would like to participate, please pass on the announcement.

Nominations for the 2024 ACS Undergraduate Award for Excellence in Chemical Safety & Ethics will open on January 1, 2024 and run through June 1, 2024.

This award is co-sponsored by the ACS Committee on Ethics (ETHX) and the ACS Division of Chemical Health and Safety (CHAS) and recognizes senior undergraduates who have actively demonstrated the intersectionality between chemical safety and ethical behavior. Chemical safety is not merely a matter of rule compliance but one of culture—a matter of doing the right thing with respect to oneself and one's peers.

Eligibility: Institutions worldwide are each invited to nominate one outstanding graduating senior in one of the chemical sciences (chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, chemical engineering technology or some permutation thereof) who has actively demonstrated the connection between chemical safety and ethics through behavior and schoolwork.

The nominee will receive the following:

  • A letter of recognition from the Chairs of CHAS and ETHX, as well as a certificate of recognition
  • One year's membership in the Division of Chemical Health & Safety
  • Recognition on the CHAS and ETHX websites

The form for nominations can be found at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1uDR99JksnFKQ3NO5qC1GEzW5rSA3lzh7gJAyaq24nM4/edit?usp=sharing_eil_m&invite=CKOmndMC&ts=6592dbc6&sh=9D6XnUWS--6qXoW2&ca=1&exids=71471476,71471470,71521263,71521257
