Demystify:
Hi Michelle:

A couple of thoughts:

Under some circumstances, the columns can be returned to the manufacturer for reconditioning. They might take back the entire system if they've been hardly used.

Secondly, these systems are quite expensive and have value.  Not to be flip, but have you considered ebay or a used equipment clearing house? In a previous life, my institution had a retail surplus store where surplus but usable equipment could be offered to others - everything from ultra centrifuges to file cabinets.

I don't know what residual might be in the columns. If you could get a sample and test for peroxides? I see you're in EH&S. Your haz waste group should have peroxide test strips you could use for a quick and dirty test.

Hope this helps.  To toss these in the landfill would be painful to me.

Hello Everyone,

I’m looking for anyone who has disposed of a solvent purification system – specifically, how did you address the risk of accumulated peroxides in some of the columns (such as ether and THF)? Is this even a notable risk? I’ve seen some literature mentions about running dilute acidic ferrous sulfate through alumina columns to remove peroxides, but I’ve not seen anything addressing whether this is necessary for these types of systems.

We’ve got a few systems that have been unused for years and the PIs want to dispose of them. After our recent peroxide detonation, our team is feeling much more cautious about peroxide-forming chemicals.
