As a CHO, what is your biggest challenge?

We have received nine responses from CHO's to the question.  Is yours one of these or something else,  Please respond directly to me.  I will share the full results when completed.  ... Jim

Replies so far ...

Not having a CIH to help with chemical monitoring. We are handling it within my 3 person lab safety group, which is going okay so far, but we also do all the lab inspections on campus (600+), fume hood testing, etc.

EPA rolling out new regulations via TSCA is already putting pressure on our limited staff and there does not seem to be an end in sight.

Apathy from our Chemical Safety Committee

Lack of staffing has to be the biggest hurdle for us

Buy-in/Compliance

Usually from faculty who have been around for a while. Nothing bad has happened to them or their students, so they get lax and wonder what the fuss is all about.

New faculty and staff are good if we start with a strong foundation of safety culture. Those long-time, lackadaisical faculty end up producing "bad" students who don't value safety and try to hide when they mess up.

People don’t take it serious

Can’t get buy in from other’s

Viewed as adding unnecessary red tape to processes

Housekeeping

Who does weekly eyewash/safety shower checks

Getting Buy-in

Lack of Management Initiative

Not enough time

Lack of professional development opportunities

1. Housekeeping

2. Supervisor knowledge (lack thereof) processes and materials

3. Housekeeping

Lack of Monetary Resources

Knowing a little bit about hazards but not a complete working knowledge

PS.  LSI now has virtual lab inspections, safety program evaluations, document reviews, plus courses and seminars ... all virtual.  And, a complimentary,  updated version of our classic Laboratory Safety Guidelines is now available on our website ... https://www.labsafety.org/product/lab-safety-rules,

Plus Be sure to take our Safer Science Self-Assessment to see how your School or University stacks up!
