Demystify:

Rose,

Our institution’s rules are the same across all types of labs – anyone entering a lab must wear proper lab attire (i.e. long pants, closed-toed shoes), anyone doing work in a lab must have received training before beginning work, and appropriate controls must be in place for the hazards present. Given the incredible range of research done here the specific mix of controls used in any laboratory, or for any specific experiment, will vary depending on those hazards (we have chemistry labs that work at BSL-2 and wear barrier lab coats and pharmacology labs that use pyrophorics and wear flame-resistant lab coats).

NOt an academic institution, but a production lab. We use all of the same PPE in Microbiology as in Chemistry, and also require masks to prevent sample contamination.

We deal with BSL2 organisms, which are handled in a biosafety cabinet. We also have UV eye protection for the BSCs.

Our waste is disposed of as Regulated Medical Waste or agars are mixed with a bleach solution, which is treated as hazardous waste. We do not handle tissue or blood-borne pathogens. From a chemical perspective, we mostly use bleach solutions for cleaning in the micro lab, which we have to ensure are not mixed with incompatible chemicals, namely alcohol.

Hi all,
I know this is a chemistry safety group, but many of us are the CHO's of our institutions and therefore also deal with chemicals in biology labs. I'm wondering how your biology lab safety rules differ from your chemistry lab safety rules. Looking at general biology, organismal biology, cell biology, anatomy (cadavers), microbiology, and research labs. Do you require safety glasses? Safety goggles? Closed toe shoes? Lab coat? Gloves? Can students work alone in the lab? Anything and everything.
Feel free to respond privately if you wish, I'm happy to compile the data (without identifying institutions) if anyone would like to see it.
Thanks in advance.
Rose
