Dear All:
The Office of Safety Programs will launch the 3rd
Edition of Laboratory Safety for Chemistry Students (LSCS-3) eTextbook during the upcoming ACS Spring Meeting in San Diego, CA. The first two editions of this textbook, published in 2010 and 2016 by Wiley, laid the foundation for chemistry lab safety
education. In a generous move, authors Dr. David Finster and Dr. Robert Hill have donated the third edition to the American Chemical Society (ACS), making the textbook freely accessible to the global chemistry community. ACS Office of Safety Programs was leading
a very collaborative project to produce the e-textbook, which will be launched in San Diego and offered to all at no charge!
We invite all of us travelling to San Diego to attend this event. For all of you who will not be able to attend, please see the attached flyer for the link to the form we use to collect contact information
of people who would like to receive information about the new textbook. Please help us promote the event!
Hot Off the Press: ACS's New, Free Lab Safety e-Textbook!
Presented by Dr. Robert Hill & Dr. Weslene Tallmadge
12:30 PM - 1:20 PM PDT
Monday, March 24, 2025
Room: Exhibit Hall D-E, Expo Theater 2 #3453 (San Diego Convention Center)
The third edition covers a comprehensive range of safety topics that all undergraduate chemistry majors should be familiar with by graduation. LSCS is structured into introductory, intermediate, and advanced
topics, making it a complete yet versatile resource for integrating chemical safety instruction into the four-year undergraduate curriculum. The content aligns fully with ACS recommendations for safety education.
LSCS-3 can be used as a stand-alone textbook for a dedicated safety course or as a supplemental resource to enhance safety education across all chemistry laboratory courses.

Hi Bob,
Thank you for the information about the free e-textbook. Could you provide more details about the launch at ACS San Diego and how one can access the textbook?
Best,
Monica

Hi Kendra. My name is Robert (Bob) Hill. I am a long time member of CHAS. I am retired and don't get to meetings as I did in the past. I saw that you or someone in CHAS is doing a virtual workshop on safety culture on March 16. I wanted to let you know that at the National ACS meeting in San Diego from March 23-27, 2025., the ACS is releasing the 3rd Edition of Laboratory Safety for Chemistry Students by David C. Finster and Robert H. Hill, Jr.. It is an e-textbook for undergraduate students that is designed to provide chemical and laboratory safety education for all four years of undergraduate student - AND IT IS FREE!!. Students and faculty will have full and free access to the book which is 8 chapters (73 sections) and is based on RAMP. I included Marta and Rachel if you need more information. Thought your audience might want to know about this new free ACS safety resource.
Thanks.Bob
