Demystify:
Debbie,

I've been at the Society of Toxicology Annual Meeting all this week.

There were lots of presentations of basic research on wildfire smoke.  Nearly all focused on inhalation of particulate matter, especially PM2.5 and smaller regarding the effects on terminal bronchioles and alveoli, with capillary leaking resulting in non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema.  Also triggering of inflammatory responses which can lead to exacerbation of existing asthma, new onset of asthma, and possible Reactive Airways Dysfunction Syndrome.

Naturally, the well-known release of carbon monoxide is always present, and as wood and brush hace substances containing both a C and an N component, flaming or pyrolysis (smouldering) can release cyanide.

From many wood fire burn studies a very wide variety of other toxic gases/vapors may be released, including methmoglobin indcers.

I hope that gives some perspectives for questions for the panel.

Hi all

At the Spring meeting,  there will be an Expo session on this topic (details below).  CHAS is a co-sponsor of this session.

Our program specialist has asked if we could propose questions for the panel discussion - from a chemical health and safety perspective.

Please reply back to me with your thoughts and questions.

Thanks!
