Demystify:

Some areas have such a requirement for a hardwired telephone, such as EPA RCRA in the main waste accumulation area. Very prudent to have it in your general chemistry prep room for emergencies (aided individual such as fainting or exposure, small spills, repairs, checking in with lab supervisors or other lab staff.

So yes, very important in prep areas for summoning assistance, communication, and taking safety seriously.

It also makes it a lot easier to enforce a no cellphone rule if you have one.

Reliability can be complicated if it is not true copper such as VoIP or other connections that can be interrupted by power loss or network connections, something else to consider. Radio communication with campus safety might be a decent alternative.

Good Luck!

James

We are remodeling our organic chemistry and physics labs. We had a phone on the wall in the prep area in the old lab. Is that a requirement? And if so, is there anything we should consider with it?

Our school is thinking of removing all the phones from offices and maybe keeping the ones in the labs so that is also on the radar. They definitely never get used and are clunky to use.

Thanks,

Jarral
