Hello DHAS community,
I’m reaching out to connect with colleagues at higher education institutions who are responsible for implementing the new DCM (dichloromethane) rule. At our institution, we’re actively exploring strategies for compliance, but we are encountering some challenges—particularly with researchers for whom DCM remains critical.
Examples include:
-Synthetic organic chemistry where DCM is required for specific reaction conditions or to isolate target molecules.
-Use of DCM as a mobile phase or co-solvent in flash chromatography systems.
-EPR (electron paramagnetic resonance) experiments needing solvent mixtures that form glass at cryogenic temperatures.
-Solubility constraints - where after exploring alternatives, DCM is the only effective solvent for certain organic or inorganic compounds.
I'm interested in hearing about your substitution efforts for your DCM applications—what has worked, what hasn’t?
What about your use of engineering controls - Have snorkels been adequate when fume hoods aren’t feasible (for large equipment).
