Demystify:
The mental and physical walkthrough Jessica describes are key to putting people on a more automatic response when something Does Happen.

During in-lab training I like to quote the apocryphal statistic that when a plane crashes one has about a minute to get out of the wreckage to avoid being burned alive and studies have shown that those most likely to survive are those who thought about what they would do in the event of a crash. Of course, I don’t know how they interviewed the people who didn’t survive…

I just took a quick look and people have written this up even though I didn’t find any links to hard data: https://alexanderemmanual.com/how-to-survive-a-plane-crash-10-tips-that-could-save-your-life/

Obviously, this mindset favors any sort of incident that requires an emergency response - mass shootings (escape routes, using an extinguisher as a weapon etc.), earthquakes (where will I shelter), chemical spill (remember to cut clothing off), getting mugged, whatever. Chance favors the prepared mind.

Best wishes,

Rob Toreki
