Since I started sharing this link to my students at the start of the semester, I have not had to remind them to keep their safety goggles on.
Warm regards,

| How do we get students to take safety eyewear seriously? One way is by sharing stories, like the MIT incident and article, “A cautionary tale from the past,” or the Science article, “Wear your safety goggles.” Another could be a helpful podcast that students can listen to, like this one from Skilled, Safe, and Trailblazing about Eyewash Training. Having a discussion during training, inspections, or just as a conversation in passing about the importance of safety eyewear and being prepared to use an eyewash station in an emergency can help our students and researchers. You could even use the scene from the Office! |

What you may not know is that when the paper was published on August 23rd, 2022, Research Safety Specialists in the Laboratory Chemical and Physical Safety group at Stanford University had follow-up questions. In the following months after, the journal, Dr. Patel (corresponding author and PI), and the Research Safety Specialists had very productive discussions that were shared in the addition. You can view a summary of the additional clarifications and comments in the addition here. Because of the paper and additional summary, Dr. Patel received a grant from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Government of India, for the development of their laboratory infrastructure and the discovery of anti-cancer molecules. |

Jessica is deeply grateful for the community she found within ACS CHAS back when she was a graduate student navigating the balance between safety and productivity in the lab. She is proud to have contributed to the growth of graduate researcher–led Laboratory Safety Teams (LSTs) through peer-led workshops and the broader LST community. Today, she continues to support these efforts as DocMartin on Discord through the Laboratory Safety Teams Community. |

She recently launched a new podcast, Skilled, Safe, and Trailblazing, which explores how scientists, educators, and safety professionals prepare the next generation of laboratory workers. Each episode dives into real-world stories, best practices, and the evolving rules and regulations that shape modern lab training—highlighting strategies that strengthen both technical skill and safety mindset.
The podcast launched in September 2025, with new episodes released on the first Tuesday of every month. Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or Amazon Music, and join the conversation on LinkedIn by searching for the show’s page.
Jessica is always looking for guest co-hosts to co-create episodes, panel members to unpack complex topics, and interviewees with innovative approaches, inspiring experiences, or useful tools to share. Reach out at SkilledSafeAndTrailblazing**At_Symbol_Here**gmail.com to collaborate and help build a lab workforce that is skilled, safe, and trailblazing. |
