Demystify:

Charles,

Thank you for validating those links and for sharing your perspective on lab coats, much appreciated. Yes, eye protection is definitely an issue in our chemistry labs. The number one problem is fogging, which often results in goggles migrating straight to the student’s forehead. Another issue is fit: some students have narrower faces, which leaves large gaps at the sides. Any recommendations you have would be very welcome.

You absolutely made my day by mentioning ARDROX 6367 a product I have sold for years. We supplied it to US Airways in the past, along with several smaller regional operators here in Salt Lake City.

ARDROX 6367 is identified as approved within the Pratt & Whitney family. For PT6A engines, final authority would rest with the Pratt & Whitney Canada engine-specific maintenance documentation, which is something I could readily request if needed.

We have also sold 6367 into natural gas compressor stations, notably to Chevron facilities in Wyoming.

I would have never imagined anyone on this listserv would recognize Chemetall’s offerings, that genuinely surprised me. I started my career with Dinol in 1998, and when Dinol was acquired by Chemetall in 2000, I stayed on. A few years later, I went out on my own and founded NALTIC, with the blessing of my former boss, Michael Lissandrello.

Warm regards,

Dear David,

At UCSF we use Bulwark FR lab coats. They’ve served us well. The only thing to know that is when laundering them they have specific requirements to maintain the FR fabric/nomex. The pickle with the Bulwark products is that they are going to be more expensive than a standard lab coat. I ended up buying one for myself because as Dr. Kletz once said: if you think safety is expensive, try an accident!

One other consideration as well: Are students required to order eye protection? I am a big stickler for that. A colleague of mine said that safety glasses are for the chemist what a stethoscope is for a nurse or physician, they're critical to the work we do. I am happy to provide recommendations, though what works for me may not work for others as we all have different face shapes.

SF State does not provide lab coats and requires students to order their own, which to me seems like a safety issue because we deal with chemicals/BSL2 products and not having a standardized product for biological/chemical hazards and flame retardancy seems less than ideal. One last thought: I always recommend the knitted cuffs as you can don gloves over the cuffs to prevent possible contamination of the cuff. Happy to send over photos too if that doesn't make a lot of sense.

Thank you for your dedication to keep your students safe, it is deeply appreciated.

As an aside, is the ARDROX 6367 compatible with the PWC PT6A family of turboprops? Always interesting seeing how much goes into maintenance of those as the temperatures and pressures they deal with are fascinating!

Respectfully,

Hello,

Does anyone have recommendations for lab coats for Gen Chem students?  We use conc. acids and bases and use bunsen burners, so flame resistance is important.

Looking for a link I can send my students to to order.

Thanks so much for your help!
