I am happy to share Cornell University is hiring a Chemical Hygiene Officer (University CHO) to lead its campus-wide laboratory chemical safety program at a top-tier, research-intensive university supporting cutting-edge chemical research.
This is a program-owning role responsible for setting institutional expectations and ensuring that chemical safety systems work effectively in real laboratories—not just on paper.
Key responsibilities include:
-
Ownership of the Chemical Hygiene Plan / Laboratory Safety Manual
-
Leadership of lab inspections and injury/illness reduction strategies
-
Oversight of laboratory ventilation and fume hood performance standards
-
Chemical safety training and expert consultation
-
Support for laboratory design review, renovation, and decommissioning
We are seeking candidates with a master’s degree in chemistry or a closely related field and 3–5+ years of laboratory or chemical safety experience (academic or research settings preferred). Professional certifications are welcome but not central to the role.
This position plays a critical role in supporting both research excellence and a strong, practical safety culture across a diverse chemical research program.
