Hi Andrew,
Yes, we rent the lab coats for our teaching and research labs. Several years back, we implemented a "lab fee" that isn't much for the students, but helps cover this cost.
It is a bit of work on the front end, but we got racks for each lab (kind of rolling coat racks-like you may see at garage sales). I have a spreadsheet of our labs each semester and the number of students and I order a broad size range. We shuffle a bit of the coats around if needed, but it works pretty well!
It is the best scenario given that we don't want the students carrying around coats that could have chemicals or biologicals on them. We get them laundered every semester, but if there is a spill or a dirty coat or just a stinky one- our vendor grabs the coats and swaps them out for us. That doesn't happen much.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any other questions,
Shannon

Just curious, but are you saying that your University rents lab coats for the undergraduate student labs? Or are you talking more about grad students and researchers? If
so, where do you store them and how often do you have them laundered/exchanged for new?

We use a local rental company and rent the flame resistant , chemical protectant coats because they are very expensive and require special cleaning for the fabric.
WorkRite’s Nomex coats are what we have been using. I’m happy to share more about our protocol if you would like to reach out

Does anyone have recommendations for lab coats for Gen Chem students? We use conc. acids and bases and use bunsen burners, so flame resistance is important.
Looking for a link I can send my students to to order.
Thanks so much for your help!
