Demystify:

If you rent the cylinder the code says you need the supplier’s written permission to refill the cylinder. (Hint: You won’t get it.)

If you own the cylinder then you are in a gray area. DOT cylinders have no real allowance for fatigue failure like ASME vessels. That is because the assumption is that they will be rarely failed and emptied over their reinspection cycle and that they will be professionally reinspected/retested.

If you want to do what they are doing you need to buy a much more expensive ASME rated vessel. They are fairly readily available.

Or tell them to but a cheap electric air compressor.

Glad to discuss further if you would like to call

Subject: [DCHAS-L] safety of refilling gas cylinder with compressed air

Hello, all,

I am looking for some guidance on the prohibition for refilling gas cylinders.

I discovered that at my institution a standard T-sized cylinder is being refilled ~2x/week with compressed air for use with a pneumatic nail gun and for dusting off machines in a wood shop. It has been in use in this fashion for ~10 years.

I am interested in any info you might have to explain why not to do this and in alternatives you might recommend.

Thanks so much in advance for any help you can give me with this,
