Demystify:
All of our 8 ft hoods had both horizontal sliding and full vertical lifting. There were four glass panes in each where two could be open at the same time. I have seen vertical only, but never horizontal opening only. Could just be my limited experience. However, one thing that has not been mentioned is the chipping that occurs when the little protective plastic clips come off the individual panes and students slam the sashes together. Newer designs may not have this issue. We actually bought a backpack vacuum to clean the glass out of the tracks every so often.

That said, in our organic lab, 2 students worked in each 8 ft hood and so the horizontal slides were convenient for that. No idea about which is safer.

Hi all,

A new PI joining our Chemistry Department is sharing a very strong preference for vertically-split fume hood sashes (i.e., ones that open side to side), saying that they’re safer. Is anyone aware of any studies on this, or have any other insights? Thanks!

Sincerely,
