1. A big shout-out to Dr. Chris Kolodziej who exported me his trove of DCHAS-L posts he had been saving since 2018. Thanks to his generous donation, I was able to recover thread metadata for 7,455 existing archive posts, which moves our onset of threading from August 2022 all the way back to August of 2018. I was able to automate most of that and then there were another 31 previously missing original posts and 33 replies that I was able to recover. I had to curate the thread reconstruction for the “new” ones by hand, but what’s another couple hours of data review, bah.
Aside: this is the power of me having put all this into a database. Other than the new posts/replies, I didn’t have to touch or rewrite the post content at all. The stuff I was looking for was the metadata that give each email a unique messageID and the reply-to schema.
2. With the archive threading back as far as we can probably get it, I have now made each annual threaded index display all cross-year posts. So if a post was started in 2018 and someone continued that discussion in 2019, or even 2026, the full thread shows in each year’s thread index.
To give you an idea, we just went from this:
To this:
I can’t overstate enough how powerful the threading implementation is for anyone seeking to explore previous conversational topics.
Enjoy browsing down memory lane!

PS: There will be even more to come in a week or three!
