Notre Dame and U. of Pennsylvania to Host CSHEMA EHS Seminars in Early 2004

The Campus Safety, Health & Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA)
is sponsoring regional seminars on laboratory safety and environmental
management issues. The seminars are directed toward those who have
interest in or responsibility for laboratory environmental health & safety
issues and include useful strategies for small as well as larger sized
campuses and other organizations with laboratory operations.

The first two regional programs will be hosted by Notre Dame on February 24
25 and the University of Pennsylvania March 9 10. Each program includes a
day-long multi-topic conference highlighting current national and regional
EH&S topics presented by widely-known speakers, followed by a half-day
workshop on a single topic with emphasis on applied program
development. Participants can choose to attend the one-day session, the
follow on half-day session or both. The conferences feature as a common
theme the importance of the interface of safety, security, and
environmental management in a time of heightened awareness of terrorism
risks.  Topics include:
    * Security of hazardous materials in teaching and research laboratories;
    * Integrated emergency planning strategies;
    * New DOT and SPCC requirements affecting laboratories;
    * How to keep up in a complex regulatory and organizational environment;
    * Update from EPAs Regional office;
    * Update on national EPA initiatives affecting laboratories;
    * The role of EMS in shaping best-practices for laboratory EHS management.
The follow on half-day workshop at Notre Dame addresses development of an
integrated approach to safety, security, and emergency planning for
laboratory organizations. At U. of Pennsylvania, the half-day
workshop explores how Environmental Management Systems can be implemented
and used effectively at colleges, universities, laboratories, and research
organizations.

One of CSHEMAs goals in offering this program is to bring EHS professional
development opportunities to individuals from campuses and other
laboratory-based organizations who may not be able to regularly attend the
annual CSHEMA conference or other national professional meetings.

The programs are scheduled for:

February 24 & 25 - Notre Dame, South Bend, IN

March 9 & 10 - University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA
