To my fellow CHAS members:
As I assume my duties as Chair of the Division of Chemical Health and
Safety, one of my goals is to stay in touch with our membership, as much
as possible. As many of you are aware, I am the Safety Director at the
C. Eugene Bennett Department of Chemistry at West Virginia University.
One of my latest projects at work is to promote safe chemical management
within our research laboratories. To this end, I am participating in
individual meetings with my research-active faculty in their offices. I
posted my presentation on my safety Web page to allow our busy faculty
to review it before our meeting. So far, the meetings have been very
well-received and the faculty have responded with thoughtful questions
and comments.
It is a learning process for me, as well, as I take careful notes on
the faculty comments and work with them to ensure laboratory safety and
safe work practices.
Here is the link to the departmental safety page and to my Chemical
Management presentation. I share it with you in the hope that it may be
useful to you in your efforts to promote safety in your workplace. Click on
"Chemical Management" and allow a few moments for the presentation to
