That is not entirely correct. TOXNET provides access to a variety of government databases (e.g. IRIS). TOXNET also provides access to HSDB which contains data that is extracted from peer reviewed publications. Before a record is put online either as a new record or an updated record, there is a peer review group that reviews both the environmental fate/effects data as well as the toxicological data. HSDB is also fully referenced. As with any database, it is important to look at when the data was extracted, the source of the data, and when the data was extracted. Some of the HSDB data may be out of date because the underlying record has not been updated recently. Of course, in dealing with a wide variety of chemical, physical, and toxicological properties for a wide variety of sometimes complex chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides; applied or used in multivariate formulations and mixtures, there can be errors in the database. Therefore, the reader should always carefully evaluate the material in the database, check multiple sources, and apply the precautionary principle. -----Original Message----- From: DCHAS-L Discussion List [mailto:DCHAS-L**At_Symbol_Here**LIST.UVM.EDU] On Behalf Of Dr. Jay A. I wouldn't rely on TOXNET any farther than I could throw this computer with my hands tied behind my back!
