Subject: Re: Nomex Pilot's Gloves

Date: May 19, 2009 18:25 UTC

Author: actually military flight experience (~9 of my 24 years in the Army), remember that these gloves are good for about 3-5 seconds and are designed to "ash" when exposed to flame. They are single layer and do not protect against heat. The leather portion will also shrink up when heated / exposed to flame. The particular chemical used to enhance the protection can also wash out after a while. They ARE NOT liquid resistant either. Don't confuse these with the multi-layer gloves you may see race car drivers or firemen wearing. The flight gloves are designed for manual dexterity and feel with enough flame resistance to allow one to exit a burning aircraft in just a few seconds with minimal (not NO) burn related injuries.

Demystify:

Had you heard about these fatalities of a laboratory researchers in industrial labs? One in Canada and one in NJ, both apparentl y from exposure to TMS diazomethane.

This ‘Pipeline’ blog has had some excellen t discussions about chemical reaction specific safety during the last year or so.
