While
I too think it was a rather interesting over-reaction to a quite
semi-harmless
event, it should be noted that the emergency response system worked
(albeit a
little too well). Would you rather have a fire truck show up for a small
backyard BBQ grill fire, or a guy with a 5 lb fire extinguisher show up
to a
fully involved structure fire ? In my field (chemical warfare agent
destruction)
I'll take a little bit of over-reaction any day if it ensures the
safety of
my folks and myself.

"Acrylic" is a common textile material. It is
favored for
it wool like feel and commonly used in socks "Acrylic' is really
polyacrylonitrile. Polyacrylonitrile is a nice way of saying polyvinyl
cyanide. Do you think anyone would by socks made from polyvinyl
cyanide.
If you knock some socks off the shelf in your local discount
store, do
not run up to the clerk and announce, "There is a polyvinyl cyanide
spill in
aisle 10'.
