Unfortunately we (i.e., the extended community of people who use/handle/sell hazardous chemicals & associated equipment) are not in agreement on the importance of safety, or at the very least not all folks are well-informed on proper PPE, SOP's, etc., otherwise we would not be having this discussion. I agree with Chris & Monona that the time has come for C&EN to require that the advertisers submit images that display at the very least proper PPE -- given these companies' advertising budgets, the cost of taking a few new photos surely can't be much. As Neal stated it is true that C&EN works hard to ensure that proper safety practices are shown in the scientific articles, but (sorry, Neal) this also needs to carry over to the ads. I would also argue that it is more efficient to convince C&EN to require/educate about the importance of such ads instead of going after all the individual ABC companies.
