The R & D EH&S Manager position manages the development and implementation of programs, systems, processes, structure and strategy to ensure that the Scientific Organization conducts business in a manner designed to be protective of human health, safety and the environment. The EH&S Manager interfaces with Corporate EHS, reviewing EHS policies and procedures and with corporate oversight, maintaining communications with regulatory agencies. This position requires the ability to develop and optimize interpersonal/team relationships to achieve successful results.  The EH&S Manager provides two levels of expertise:


1.    The position provides guidance on regulatory and technical matters to management and personnel within the Pharmaceutical R&D, Technical Operations, Device R&D and Facilities/Maintenance organizations. The position is responsible for frequently developing original solutions to solve complex problems. This requires interpretation of complex OSHA and EPA requirements to resolve technical issues

2.    The position provides direction for the implementation of a robust EHS management system. More specifically the incumbent will provide leadership to gap analysis, management review, strategic planning, and the OSHA VPP process. 



Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for managing the development, planning, implementation, and monitoring of EHS programs within Hospira’s H3 Technical Center, to ensure a safe work environment and compliance with all corporate requirements, Federal/State statutes and regulations in the areas of safety, health and environmental responsibility. Related activities include consulting with laboratory teams to ensure that working areas are in compliance with OSHA and EPA regulations and company policies; conducting health and safety training; overseeing H3’s industrial waste program, implementing sustainability programs to reduce the H3 environmental footprint; establishing annual safety budget; performing industrial hygiene monitoring; assessing processes for handling potent drugs; maintaining MSDS information system; maintaining environmental permits and reporting requirements, ensuring completion of accident investigations; developing and assessing methods and metrics to track, measure and improve safety.   Performs gap assessment and develops/implements remediation plans.

Represents H3 organizations on Hospira’s Corporate Safety Council, Chairperson for H3 Executive Safety Council and Building Safety Committee

Responsible for authoring the H3 EHS Management System which lists and describes the R/D organization, facilities, systems, processes and administrative controls required to be compliant with applicable EHS Policies, Procedures, government and state regulations


Leads the EHS Management System initiative interfacing with Corporate Environmental Protection, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Loss Prevention, Process Safety Management, Dangerous Goods, Radiation Safety, Biosafety and Contractor Safety, utilizing existing corporate functions and consultants to ensure compliance with the EHS Management System.


Qualification s:

A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Employee Health & Safety or Industrial Hygiene, MS preferred


A minimum of 10 years of experience in the field of EH&S with 5 years management responsibility that required total coordination, oversight and responsibility for EHS matters. Candidate should have experience working directly with regulatory agencies such as OSHA, EPA and the North Shore Sanitary district.  Experience should include an increasing level of responsibility to include coaching/mentoring of others. Previous assignments should include manufacturing or plant level experience in addition to experience with R&D, Engineering, Materials Management and even administrative work areas.

The candidate must have a track record of bona fide improvements or accomplishments. The ideal candidate will have experience working and leading in a team environment, making presentations to various levels of the organization. Strong interpersonal, organizational and customer service skills are a must as well as a proven track record of leading successful teams. Strong computer literacy and application proficiency needed, as well as knowledge of EHS management systems.  

Must be able to lead and communicate through adverse conditions. Must be able to rely upon knowledge and experience to identify solutions to newly encountered problems. Creativity and flexibility in problem solving are a must. Must analyze data and manage projects, plans, issues and resources in a way that maximizes overall effort. Anticipate and overcome obstacles, by applying cross-disciplinary knowledge. Good negotiation skills and able to reach win-win solutions.

Fundamentally this position manages risk, reputation and liability issues for the H3 Technical Center as it relates to EHS issues. This individual will identify areas which need change and champion improvement efforts. In developing plans to accomplish goals this individual must be aware of cost/benefit of decisions and alternatives. As such, individual must be able to build consensus and get buy-in on best strategy and action plan.

Individual will be expected to have a strong analytical ability. Must be cognizant of regulatory changes and how they may change the operational landscape in future years.
