A Howard County motel was temporarily evacuated Saturday night after  
rescue personnel discovered high levels of potentially lethal carbon  
monoxide there, a county fire and rescue spokesman said.

Responders were called to the Sleep Inn on Second Street in North  
Laurel about 8:32 p.m. to check a report of a possible chemical leak,  

and found five children complaining of headaches and nausea, according  

to Battalion Chief Eric D. Proctor. Monitoring equipment detected high  

levels of poisonous carbon monoxide gas in the air, prompting  
authorities to evacuate 30 motel occupants and take 11 of them to  
hospitals in Laurel and Columbia. All were released after evaluation,  

Proctor said.

An improperly functioning pool heater was found to be generating the  
gas, and it was shut down. All the motel's occupants were allowed to  
return to their rooms after the building was ventilated, Proctor said.

ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. - An Aberdeen Proving Ground contractor  
died Saturday afternoon in an explosion at a laboratory.

Officials say the explosion and subsequent fire happened in the  
Edgewood area of the installation, at about 3:00 p.m.

The Aberdeen Proving Ground Fire Department responded to the fire  
alarm and 911 call at a Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense  

laboratory facility.

The fire was quickly extinguished and the area secured.

There were others workers in the building but no others were injured.

Aberdeen Proving Ground Officials say this is an isolated incident and  

there is no threat to the work force, the rest of the Proving Ground  
or the surrounding community.

FRONT RANGE COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENT INJURED AFTER CHEMICAL REACTION

LONGMONT, Colo. -- Authorities say a Front Range Community College  
student has been taken to a hospital after she suffered burns while  
diluting a chemical in a jewelry studio classroom.

Longmont emergency manager Dan Eamon tells the Daily Times-Call the  
woman was injured Saturday by a chemical reaction while she was  
diluting ferric chloride. The chemical is often used for water  
treatment and to etch metal.

Eamon says there was no explosion, although that had been the initial  

report as police, fire and hazardous materials units went to the scene.

TULSA - Tulsa firefighters responded to a hotel room fire and found an  

active meth lab, police say.

Firefighters responded to the call around 9 p.m. at the Tulsa Select  
Hotel at 5000 E. Skelly Dr.

When police arrived, no suspects were on the scene.

Tulsa Hazmat was called in to clean up the meth lab.

East Rockhill - A small fire at a Perkasie area manufacturing plant on  

Saturday turned into a hazmat incident after firefighters were exposed  

to an unknown amount of mercury in the building.
Bucks County's hazmat team responded to the incident at PSG Controls  
on Tunnel Road in East Rockhill and set up decontamination showers for  

firefighters and their equipment.
Medical personnel were also on hand to take firefighters' vital signs.  

Both procedures were precautionary, said Leif Loheide, public  
information officer for the Perkasie Fire Co.
Eight fire departments and 100 to 125 firefighters responded to the  
scene. Most had entered the building.
Forty-five firefighters, who were the closest to the mercury, were  
taken to Grand View and St. Luke's Quakertown hospitals to have blood  

drawn and to be evaluated. Perkasie Fire Chief Dave Worthington said  
the move was precautionary.
PSG Controls manufactures thermostats and electronic controls, which  
include mercury.
Hazmat crews found high levels of mercury, Loheide said. Some vials in  

the facility had fallen and spilled.

a hazardous chemical spill on U.S. Highway 80 in Lowndes county.
The Burkeville Fire Chief tells CBS 8 News that crews are still  
cleaning up 500 gallons of phosphoric acid near White Hall.

He says a tank fell off of a flatbed truck onto the highway this  
afternoon. The cleanup is expected to take all night.

At least two plastic factories which also PT Sumber Mas warehouse in  
Rawa Lele warehouse area, RT 04/10, Kalideres burned down on Friday  
(4/29). Luckily, there are no casualties in the fire incident. But,  
money loss predicted up to hundreds of million rupiahs.

Maskun (32) local resident expressed that the fire started at 7 am.  
Even though the factory had not operated, dozens of employees had come  

to begin their activities. Suddenly fire started inside the factory.  
The employees and local resident tried to extinguish the fire. But,  
the fire grew bigger and spread to other buildings due to flammable  
objects.

"The residents have tried extinguishing the fire but the effort was  
result-less," said Maskun, Friday (4/29).

Firefighters and a hazardous materials team worked to try to contain a  

fuel spill in the city Friday morning.
An underground fuel tank was reported to be leaking fuel at about 8:30  

a.m. near the Carpet & Tile Mart and Sherwin-Williams stores in  
the 1200 block of Manheim Pike, said city fire Captain Ken Barton.
Grass was dead in the area and an unknown amount of fuel had gotten in  

a small stream of water, he said.
Absorbent material was put at the stream to try to capture some of the  

fuel.
Also on Friday, home heating oil leaked into the Cocalico Creek from a  

ruptured fuel tank.

HOLYOKE - A 14th jug containing chemicals suspected to be the by- 
product of the illegal production of methamphetamine found was found  
early Friday morning behind the C-Town Supermarket on Cabot Street.

Police Capt. Frederick J. Seklecki said the milk jug was found near  
some trash. =93It kind of looked like it had been there for some time,=94 
 
he said.

The discovery of 13 such jugs on Thursday, starting with two found  
along the side of Route 5 in the morning, kept emergency personnel,  
including members of the State Police Bomb Squad and the Western  
Massachusetts Hazardous Materials Team, busy throughout the day.

Traffic was also disrupted in various areas of the city, starting with  

the shut-down of a section of Route 5 for over an hour.
