Fire and Hazmat crews get the call for the smell of ammonia at a 
business in Sharonville. 

Crews responded to Cincinnati Freezer on Sharon Road just before 9 a.m. 
A worker opening the business for the day reported the ammonia smell. 

Crews located the leak in a small area of the large building. They 
closed that area off and ventilated the rest of the building. 

No one needed to be evacuated from the business or surrounding area. And 
no one was hurt.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Four men go to the hospital after a hazmat situation 
at a West Side trucking company.

Columbus fire, police, and CFD's hazmat team were called to the USF 
Holland Inc. trucking company at 4800 Journal St. just after 8 a.m. on a 
report of a hazardous material spill.

That=92s in the area of Walcutt and Roberts roads, near Hilliard.

Columbus fire told NBC4 a 55-gallon drum containing the chemical phenol 
alcohol was punctured by a fork lift.

Only a couple of gallons actually spilled out of the container. 

Workers at the distribution center stopped the container from spilling 
more.

According to Battalion Chief Mike Fowler, four male dock workers were 
checked out by medics were transported to Doctors West Hospital in 
stable condition.

Things are back to normal around the Pioneers Museum in downtown 
Colorado Springs following a Hazmat situation that forced the evacuation 
of the building.

Museum workers discovered that a Boy Scout first-aid kit from the 1930s 
was leaking Piric acid, an ointment used to treat wounds, which can 
become corrosive. The building was evacuated as a precaution. A robot 
used to retrieve the substance and dispose of it.

CHULA VISTA =97 A fire that started in a crumpled stack of junked cars 
was still burning four hours after it began Thursday afternoon at an 
auto parts recycling center in Chula Vista. Containment was expected by 
about 5:30 p.m., authorities said.

More than 60 firefighters from several agencies, including Chula Vista, 
San Diego and Hazmat responded to a vehicle fire at 1 p.m. at Pick Your 
Park Auto Wrecking on Energy Way in Chula Vista, said Deputy Chief Jim 
Garcia of the Chula Vista Fire Department.

When the first crews arrived, they found a compressed stack of eight to 
12 cars on fire, he said.

The fire spread and scorched 12 acres of grass next to the wrecking 
yard, but that blaze was contained within an hour, Garcia said. The 
vehicles continued to burn because of the amount of tire rubber, he 
said.

No homes were threatened and there were no injuries, Garcia said. The 
cause of the fire is under investigation.

Customers parked at a Hess gas station on Highland Avenue Thursday 
morning got their cars showered with powder after a chemical fire 
extinguishing system was accidentally set off.

The incident occurred shortly after 9:00 a.m., with Needham Fire 
Department reportedly on the scene soon after. The station is located on 
Highland Avenue near the Needham/Newton town line. No injuries were 
being reported as of 11:00 a.m., and representatives from Hess were on 
the scene with about six customers whose vehicles were covered by the 
powder, a dry chemical similar to the type used in home fire 
extinguishers.

PAROLE APARTMENTS EVACUATED TO VENTILATE DANGEROUS FUMES

Some of the residents of the apartments on Hearne Road in Parole were 
evacuated Wednesday just before 5 p.m. after they reported a chemical 
odor in the building.

Anne Arundel County Fire Department Capt. James Rostek said firefighters 
determined the cause of the odor to be from cleaning solutions the 
apartments' management used to clean heads of the sprinklers in the 
building.

Rostek said firefighters ventilated the building and eventually allowed 
residents to return. He said two people had shown some symptoms from the 
fumes, but they refused treatment.

A team of engineers working on NASA=92s Morpheus Project test apparently 
sparked a large grass fire on the grounds of the Johnson Space Center 
Wednesday afternoon.
The fire, which started about 3 p.m., was burning over a wide area 
behind the Houston Fire Department Station 72 on Saturn Lane and across 
the road from Space Center Intermediate School.
No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged as the firemen 
quickly began fighting the blaze, which was aided by the wind.
By 5 p.m. the fire was mostly out after searing a wide area of grass and 
burning dozens of bales of hay provided for the Texas Longhorns, which 
graze nearby.
A NASA website describes the project: "Morpheus is a vertical test bed 
vehicle demonstrating new green propellant propulsion systems and 
autonomous landing and hazard detection technology. Designed, developed, 
manufactured and operated in-house by engineers at NASA's Johnson Space 
Center, the Morpheus Project represents not only a vehicle to advance 
technologies, but also an opportunity to try out 'lean development' 
engineering practices."
HFD and NASA plan a joint investigation into the cause of the blaze.

Two firefighters had to be airlifted to Memphis and some 15 houses in 
the Glass community west of Obion had to be evacuated Wednesday when a 
farm truck pulling a spreader buggy filled with ammonium nitrate caught 
fire, spreading toxic fumes in the area.
Firefighters Paul Duren and Jonathan Tolley with the Obion Volunteer 
Fire Department were transported by helicopter to the Regional Medical 
Center in Memphis after they were overcome by fumes from the ammonium 
nitrate, according to Obion Fire Chief Jamie Evans.
Both men were listed in stable condition today, according to Evans, who 
checked on their condition this morning.
Tolley was scheduled to be released from the Memphis hospital today, but 
due to complications with Duren=92s condition he will be kept there 
another night, according to Evans.
Ammonium nitrate is used as a high nitrogen fertilizer, but is also 
highly combustible and very toxic.
It was about 10 a.m. Wednesday when Obion firefighters were called to a 
field off Ben Morris Road in the Glass community, according to Evans.
He said a farm truck owned by the Obion Grain Co. was being driven by 
Kane Stacks. He had pulled off into the field when it is suspected a 
mechanical fire broke out in the truck, causing the ammonium nitrate to 
catch fire, Evans said.

An investigation has begun into a massive explosion at a Welsh oil 
refinery last night that killed four people.

Witnesses reported hearing a blast from the Chevron refinery in 
Rhoscrowther, near Pembroke, on Thursday evening.

Chief Supt Gwyn Thomas, of Dyfed Powys Police, said police were 
informing the four victims' families and an investigation was under way 
into what appeared to be a =93tragic industrial incident"=94.

No formal identifications have taken place and the Coroner has been 
informed.

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - A fluid spill created a slippery situation 
Longview this morning.

HAZMAT crews along with Longview PD and the fire department worked to 
clean up a hydraulic fluid spill on Hwy 259 between I-20 and Neiman 
Marcus Pkwy.

A dump truck from Longview Asphalt Inc. leaked all of its hydraulic fuel 
out onto the roadway after the driver left the power take-off engaged 
and the hydraulic fluid hose broke.  The plant operator tells KLTV the 
driver was unaware of the leak.

Crews have cleaned up the spill and the northbound outside lane of Hwy 
259 has been reopened.

WOODLAWN - Marion Road has reopened at Ohio 4 after it was shut down 
for about 90 minutes due to a chemical spill in a business parking lot 
early Wednesday, according to Woodlawn police.

No injuries were reported when a Rumpke driver spotted an unknown 
substance with a fume-like odor in the parking lot of Academy Rentals, 
116 Marion Rd., about 3:30 a.m., said Sgt. Kevin Sorrells.

Residents in the six surrounding homes were advised to remain indoors 
until a Hazmat crew arrived to investigate. Sorrells said they 
determined the substance was not lethal, and the scene was cleared by 
5:30 a.m.

GALLATIN =97 Federal safety investigators said Wednesday that a =93fire 
involving leaking hydrogen gas=94 occurred at the GKN/Hoeganaes Corp. 
plant Friday morning, fatally burning two workers and leaving a third in 
critical condition.

But the cause of the fire remains unknown, according to members of a 
team from the U.S. Chemical Safety Board investigating the incident. The 
team arrived Saturday and has been looking into the incident since.

They also said they don=92t know whether combustible iron dust blamed 
for two explosions at the plant earlier this year had a role in the 
latest incident. The first of those incidents, on Jan. 31, resulted in 
two other deaths.

Students were sent to the principal's office this morning after they 
allegedly set off small chemical explosions in plastic bottles at Mira 
Loma High School.
Nobody was hurt in the minor explosions that were set off at the 
school's running track, a San Juan Unified School District official 
said.
Four young people were involved in the 7:30 a.m. mischief that created a 
mess, officials said. However, there was not of any danger to the 
surrounding neighborhood. The school is located at 4000 Edison Ave.

No injuries were reported from a hazardous materials call Tuesday 
morning. First responders were dispatched at 8:45 a.m. to Coal City Cob 
in the 4300 block of Interstate 35E in Waxahachie.

=93The call came in as a chemical spill or leak. What we had is we had a 
semi-tanker truck. We are not sure how much hydrochloric acid it had in 
it but when they pulled it inside the building it started spewing acid

PLANT EVACUATED AFTER AMMONIA LEAK

An ammonia leak at a west Shreveport dairy Wednesday morning caused a 
small fire and led to the brief evacuation of the plant.

 No one was injured in the incidents at Foremost dairy, located off 
Monkhouse Drive near Shreveport Regional Airport.

 The Fire Department was called to the dairy about 9:20 a.m. after 
anhydrous ammonia began leaking. Firefighters said they found a one-inch 
pipe that was leaking from a valve that had ruptured in a maintenance 
room.  That rupture caused a small fire that was extinguished before the 
Fire Department arrived, Assistant Fire Chief Scott Wolverton said.  

The plant evacuated all 136 employees as a precaution, Wolverton said.
