HAZMAT cleanup of sodium hydroxide spill closed Highwa y 22 east of Gates for more than four hours Monday.

A carton holding the corrosive c hemical ruptured inside a semi trailer about 2:30 p.m. The truck wa s carrying groceries and mixed cleaning chemicals.

The driver lost control trying t o avoid something on the highway and the truck and trailer tipped, according to Oregon State Police Trooper James Ward.

Oregon Department of Transportation o fficials closed the highway while HAZMAT cleaned up the chemical spill.

The driver , Timothy Ratzenburg, 33, from Palmdale, Calif., was not injured. Passenger G erman Olan, 43, from Mohave, Calif., suffered minor injuries.

DALLAS - A four to six inch gas line was cut at C ommerce and Akard streets early Tuesday evening prompting evacuati ons in downtown Dallas.

Dallas Fire Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said evacuations wer e ordered around the Magnolia Hotel, but he was not sure how many people wer e told to get out.

HIGHRISE EVACUATED AFTER DIESEL SPILL ON ROOF

CALGARY - Roughly 250 em ployees were removed from a downtown highrise Tuesday evening afte r 500 litres of diesel fuel was spilled on the building=E2=80=99s rooftop.

The spi ll happened just before 7 p.m. on top of the Esso commercial build ing in the 400 block of 2nd Street S.W., the Calgary fire department said.

Workers had replaced an old fuel tank with a new one for an emergency generator. As they were transferring the diesel from one to another, it spilled, said bat talion chief Larry Fisher.

Shortly after crews arrived to investigate, fire officia ls called in the hazardous materials unit and ordered the building evacuated .

=E2=80 =9CIt=E2=80=99s a combustible product and that was the safest and quickest t hing to do,=" said Fisher.

Hazmat crews removed roughly half of the diesel b y pumping it into pails and transferring it into drums to keep it from leaki ng into the building or the sewer system.

Sehri (Uttar Pr adesh), June 22: A major fire broke out at a pesticide-manufacturing fact ory in Uttar Pradesh's Sehri District on Wednesday, destroying goods worth m illions of rupees. 

The factory caught fire at around 4.00 a.m. due to a short circuit.

"The fire is massive and due to this the neighbouring building was also damaged and poses a threat now. All residents of the buildings next do or have been evacuated," said Kapiv Dev Agrawal, Chairman of the Municipal C orporation.

Several drums containing chemicals and diesel were inside the factory a t the time of the fire and that increased the intensity of the flames.

Fire offici als are still struggling to control the flames.

WETHERILL LAB SPILL AT PURDUE SENDS SIX TO H OSPITAL AS PRECAUTION (UPDATE)

A third -floor lab in Purdue University's Wetherill Hall remains closed this morning following a chemical spill that sent six to the hospital Monday night.

Aroun d 6:30 p.m., two graduate students were working in the lab when a canis ter of hydrogen fluoride exploded, said university spokeswoman Jeanne Norber g.

The two students - and four firefighters who responded to the incident - were t aken to St. Elizabeth hospital in Lafayette Monday night, Norberg said.

The g raduate students were treated for their brief exposure to the chemical, and t hen were released. The firefighters, who wore masks when they responded to t he scene, were taken only as a precaution, Norberg said.

Hydrogen fluoride is an e xtremely dangerous gas that forms corrosive acid upon contact with flesh. No rberg said it's still unclear how the explosion happened.

"They didn't even know t hey had it in the lab," she said of the students.

The lab, located in Room 327, b elongs to faculty member Philip Low, Purdue's Ralph C. Corley Distinguished P rofessor of Biochemistry.

Low's research has centered on attaching cancer-fighting drugs to homing molecules - such as folates, to which many cancer cells are attracted - to create more effective medicines.

POLICE LOG: CHEMICAL EXPLOSION INJURES ONE WOMAN

At 11:12 a.m., police respond ed to a chemical explosion at a Presidential Way building. According to poli ce, a lab worker was mixing sodium hydroxide and tetrahydrofuran when the mi xture exploded in her face. Other employees on scene immediately treated the worker, said police. She was taken to Winchester Hospital for several small cuts on her face and neck.

POLICE O VERCOME BY FUMES FROM 'HOMESWEST DRUG LAB'

TWO police officers were overcome by fumes coming from a clandestine drug lab i nside a Homeswest unit in Carlisle last night.

Just before 10pm, four office rs went to the unit in Mars Street after neighbours reported feeling unwell b ecause of strong chemical odours coming from the house.

When police opened the fr ont door of the home two of the officers standing nearest to the door were o vercome by the strong fumes, suffering mild respiratory problems.

They were treat ed at the scene by St John Ambulance and later taken to Rockingham Hospital f or further treatment.

A man and a woman allegedly found inside the home at the time were arrested after numerous chemicals were found inside the unit.
