MIAMI (WSVN) -- Fire rescue are on the scene after several residents hav e been evacuated after a gas leak.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue received a call at around  9:30 p.m. Tuesday after a homeowner was complaining of a foul odde r coming from the laundry room of a trailer park community in the area of No rthwest 30th Avenue and 36th Street in Northwest Miami-Dade.

When firefighters arrive d on the scene they found a 100 pound propane gas cylinder that was leaking. "At this point is burning clean. the gas in not traveling anywhere that Haz mat team is here and they have it under control," said a firefighter.

Hazmat crews a re conducting a control burn to burn off the gas.

Trailer homes in the area have b een evacuated. No injuries have been reported

FAMILY HOSPIT ALIZED BY HURRICANE IRENE-RELATED CARBON MONOXIDE EXPOSURE

A Fort Washington family was hospital ized Monday after being exposed to high levels of carbon monoxide in their h ome.

Ab out 11 p.m., police received a report that a woman in a home in the 1240 0 block of Surrey Circle Drive was semi-conscious.

The 911 responder who took the c all determined that the family, which had lost power over the weekend becaus e of Hurricane Irene, had been using a gas generator to power some appliance s. The generator was in the single-family home=E2=80=99s attached garage wit h the door closed.

Fort Washington firefighters, paramedics and hazmat personnel re sponded to the home, where they found the woman unconscious on a bed and dan gerously high carbon monoxide levels of more than 900 parts per million (ppm ). Prince George=E2=80=99s County Fire/EMS officials noted that a normal car bon monoxide level would fall between 0 and 30 ppm.

JENISON, Mich. (WOOD) -  An Ottawa Cou nty family is now among the dozens impacted by a product meant to beautify o utdoor decks and keep the bugs away.

A 50-year-old woman was with her family in h er backyard when a firepot she owned exploded as she added more liquid to it  Friday night.

Problems of ten arise because of the nature of flame that burns from an alcohol-based pr oduct like the ones in question. The flame is often difficult to see or some times invisible, prompting consumers to dangerously add more fuel or attempt to reignite a fire that is still burning.

ARMY MAKES SAFE QUANTITY OF UNSTABLE CHEMICALS

An Army Bomb Disposal team made safe a quantity of unstable chemicals at the Central Veterinary Research La boratory in Celbridge, Co. Kildare this evening.

The Defence Forces deployed the t eam to the laboratory where the chemical, picric acid, had been found during a routine audit of chemicals.

The team arrived on scene at 5pm and remo ved the chemical to nearby waste ground. The team carried out a controlled e xplosion in order to make the chemical safe.

Picric Acid is a chemical re-agent an d is routinely used in laboratories but can crystallise and become unstable o ver time.

EXPLOSION ON SHIP ROCKS SANDEFJ ORD

The former wh aling port of Sandefjord was rocked by a loud explosion on board a ship bert hed at a chemical plant Tuesday afternoon. Police were asking people to stay indoors as a strong odor settled over the area.

No rwegian Broadcasting (NRK) reported that police were unsure whether there wa s any danger of more explosions. The vessel, described by VG Nett as a speci ally built chemical tanker, was tied up at the Oleon factory outside the cit y center.

The re were no immediate reports of injuries or fatalities. The vessel was listi ng to one side following the blast, and one witness said its deck had blown u p.
The explosion also sent a large cloud of smoke into the air, and police set up a security area of 1,500 meters around the stricken ship, called the Mar Christina and registered in Malta.
The blast could be heard all over Sandefjord and some residents initial ly thought it was thunder. "But then we understood it was something m ore serious,=" one witness told VG Nett.

HANOVER =E2=80=94 A Dartmouth Co llege chemistry graduate student was arrested Sunday night for all egedly running a methamphetamine lab in his apartment.

Randy Lambreghts, 28, of  3 School St., Apt. B, was charged with attempted manufacture of methamph etamine/amphetamine after the New England Field Division Clandestine Laborat ory Team searched his apartment.

Police had responded to the apartment earlier in th e day for a possible medical emergency. While at the apartment, police saw t hings that lead them to suspect drugs were being made there. The fire depart ment was called to help deal with possible hazardous materials.

The apartment buil ding was evacuated and Lambreghts was taken out of the apartment, decontamin ated by firefighters and taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Centerin Leban on for evaluation.

Police contacted the Drug Enforcement Administration and got a s earch warrant for the apartment. The Field Division Clandestine Laboratory T eam, which is made up of local, state and DEA officers trained to deal with h azardous crime scenes and evidence collection, did the search. The team seiz ed several items from the apartment and are analyzing them.

Lambreghts is a Belgian c itizen who has been attending Dartmouth for seven years, Police Chief Nichol as J. Giaccone, Jr., said Monday.

Lambreghts was held on $20,000 cash bail and was expected to appear in the 2nd Circuit Court in Lebanon to answer to the cha rge on Monday.

A post offi ce just south of the Tampa International Airport terminal was closed for abo ut 90 minutes Monday after material inside a package spilled, sickening two e mployees.

The chemical that spilled was later identified as polyvinyl material det ermined to not be hazardous, Tampa fire officials said.

The first floor of the po st office on Bessie Coleman Boulevard was evacuated about 11:20 a.m. after the employees became nauseated and reported being light-headed. The employees in the second and third floors were kept in place, fire Capt. Lon nie Benniefield said.

WICHITA, Kansas =E2=80=93 Gardiner Elementa ry School was evacuated Monday after a chemical odor entered the building.

The 480 students and their teachers returned back to the school around 1:30 after spending several hours at a nearby church.

According to Wichita Public Sch ools Spokesperson Susan Arnesman, staff and students started complaining of a chemical smell in the building late in the morning. School officials determ ined it came from a furniture lacquer being used at a construction site on t he school=E2=80=99s property and at 11:30 sent all students and st aff to St. Luke=E2=80=99s Presbyterian Church a block away.

CAMBRIDGE =E2=80=94 A small explosion at a Cambridg e chemical plant sent one person to hospital this morning.

At approximately 9:15 a .m., emergency services responded to a report of a chemical explosion at Thesis Chemistry Inc., located at 1200 Franklin Blvd. Employees were e vacuated and a worker was treated for minor injuries resulting from a reacti on between small amounts of dichloromethane and ethyl acetate.

"The react ion caused a container to shatter, and a chemist had glass embedded in his f ace, neck and chest, but none of the chemical got onto him=" said Cam bridge fire platoon chief Brad Grimwood.

Grimwood says that the worker was taken to C ambridge Memorial Hospital. The fire department then contacted CANUTEC, a br anch of Transport Canada that oversees dangerous goods, before sending in th e hazardous materials team.

The situation was deemed to be safe after the firefigh ters went through the building equipped with devices to test the air quality , and employees were able to return to work.

MINNEAPOLIS -- A Minneap olis high school was evacuated Monday morning after a chemical expl osion inside a classroom.

First responders were called to Patrick Henry High Schoo l, 4320 Newton Avenue North, around 9:30 a.m. They found a cl assroom with damage to a table and desks, but no active fire.

A recorded telephon e message was sent out to the families of Patrick Henry students Monday aft ernoon.

"Minneapolis emergency personnel and [Minneapolis Public Schools] safet y and security staff responded to the matter," part of the message said. "MP S environmental health and safety staff were on hand to monitor air quality. Students and staff were cleared to return to school at 10:40 a.m.  ;and student learning continued."

Investigators learned the explosion occurred whi le a teacher was preparing for a demonstration for students. The school was i mmediately placed in lockdown by staff and then evacuated once fire crews ar rived on scene.

A male teacher was transported to North Memorial Medical Center wi th minor burns and cuts. His condition is not known at this time, but injuri es are not life threatening. No one else was hurt in the explosion.
