IRE crews worked for close to an hour fighting a blaze at a chemical factory in Dandenong South on the weekend.

The fire which sent plumes of thick black smoke across the south east is believed to have ignited in a mixing area of the Kitchen Rd factory.

About 70 per cent of the factory was destroyed with CFA crews able to stop the fire from spreading into office, laboratory and storage areas.

There were no injuries with all staff evacuated when the fire got out of control.

SAN DIEGO -- Four people were treated Friday morning after being exposed to remnants of a tear gas-like substance at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and a hazardous materials team responded to what was initially ruled a "hazardous spill" of an unknown substance at the base. The report was received shortly before 10 a.m.
However, base officials said there was no hazardous spill, and added two Marines and two civilians standing near the base's east gate were inadvertently exposed by other Marines that had gone through CS gas training earlier in the day.
Authorities determined the area to be free of any chemicals and the gate was reopened following clean up.

CANBY =96 Students were temporarily evacuated at Canby High School after the remains of a science experiment burst into flames in a chemistry lab garbage can.

Canby Fire District responded to the call around 11:40 a.m. Friday. A teacher extinguished the fire before firefighters arrived. No one was injured.

"We got lucky," Canby Fire District Division Chief Troy Buzalsky said after the incident, which occurred in a room filled with chemicals.

Two students were walking down the hallway when they spotted flames coming from the classroom and notified faculty, Buzalsky said.

A teacher entered the chemistry lab =96 empty after a class 10 minutes earlier =96 and saw fire shooting three feet high from a metal garbage can. Inside was remnants from a chemistry experiment involving a copper penny, zinc and sodium hydroxide.

The teacher put out the fire with an extinguisher while other faculty members called police and evacuated students. About 1,200 of the school's 1,700 students were evacuated, Buzalsky said.

The wing in which the fire occurred reopened about an hour later, though the chemistry lab will remain closed for the day.

"At this time, it is believed that there was a chemical reaction that took place after the experiment in the garbage can where the discarded experiment debris was left," Buzalsky said.

PASADENA, Texas - A chemical refinery in Pasadena caught fire on Saturday night, alarming nearby residents who could hear explosions.

According to a spokesman for the Pasadena Chemical Refining Plant, the fire broke out around 7 p.m. at its facility on Red Bluff at W. Richey.

The company says the sludge at the bottom of a "coco tank" caught fire. While nearby residents said they heard at least two explosions, the company would only confirm there was a fire.

A spokesman for the Pasadena Police Department says two people were injured with non-life threatening injuries. One of the injured was sent to the hospital.
