Important Note: If your gasoline truck catches on fire, do not park it under a freeway overpass bridge.

CMU RESEARCH INSTITUTE EVACUATED BY HAZARDOUS MATERIALS SPILL
Tags: us_PA, laboratory, release, response, methyl_methacrylate

The Carnegie Mellon Research Institute at the Pittsburgh Technology Center in South Oakland was evacuated on Thursday evening because of a hazardous materials spill, Carnegie Mellon spokeswoman Teresa Thomas said.

Pittsburgh fire Chief Darryl E. Jones said there were no reports of injuries in the spill that occurred around 6 p.m. in a lab on the fourth floor of the center, at 700 Technology Drive on the site of the former Jones & Laughlin steel mill. Paramedics were called to examine at least one person for possible exposure.

Allegheny County emergency dispatchers were told the chemical that spilled was methyl methacrylate.

MAXATAWNY TWP., Pa. -
A Berks County road was closed after a leaking truck spilled tar all over the place.

Crews were dispatched to Main Street and Alfalfa Lane in Maxatawny Township at 10:30 Thursday morning.

Hazmat crews are still at the scene, trying to clean up the sticky mess.

PILBARA TRUCK CARRYING CHLORINE GAS ROLLS OVER NEAR NEWMAN
Tags: Australia, transportation, release, injury, chlorine

A TRUCK rollover in the Pilbara overnight closed a section of Great Northern Highway overnight 80km north of Newman.

Police spokeswoman Susan Usher said the triple road-train carrying LPG and chlorine gas bottles rolled about 8.30pm on the highway 80km north of Newman.

She said a HAZMAT team, police personnel and FESA workers were sent to the crash as chlorine gas is extremely poisonous.

An ambulance was also on standby, but no injuries have been reported.

CURRY SPARKS CHEMICAL SCARE

A package of potent curry powder forced the evacuation of a western Sydney mail centre last night, the ABC has reported.

According to the ABC a number of postal workers were overcome with sore throats, coughing and wheezing after examining the package about 7.30pm.

Hazmat, fire and rescue teams, police and paramedics were called to the scene.

About 150 workers were evacuated from the centre as specialists wearing breathing apparatus examined the parcel.

But what was feared to be a chemical attack turned out to be a pack of particularly spice curry powder.

TREAT A CLOTHING FIRE WITH STOP, DROP, AND ROLL

The standard advice for a clothing fire, even in a lab, is still to stop, drop, and roll. According to the National Fire Protection Association Code 45, "Standard on Fire Protection For Laboratories Using Chemicals," A.6.6.3.2:

FIRE PARTLY DISRUPTS LUKOIL CHEMICAL PLANT'S OUTPUT
Tags: Russia, industrial, fire, injury, petroleum

Russian oil company Lukoil Holdings said a fire Thursday at its Stavrolen chemical plant in southern Russia injured six people and partly disrupted production, according to Dow Jones Newswires.

It was unclear when the fire, which broke out around 2 p.m. local time (1000 GMT), would be put out and to what extent it would affect production, a company spokesman said.

The Stavrolen plant produced 684,000 metric tons of petrochemicals, mainly polyethylene, last year.

CHEMICAL BOMB EXPLODED AT ATASCADERO HIGH SCHOOL
Tags: us_CA, education, explosion, response, bomb, illegal

The San Luis Obispo County Hazmat team was sent to investigate and clean up after someone detonated a device commonly called a chemical bomb shortly before 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Atascadero High School.
Atascadero police said the explosion of the small chemical bomb did not cause any permanent damage and no one was hurt. However, it is a felony to make and detonate one of these devices.
The bomb maker apparently combined household cleaning supplies in a plastic bottle and sealed it causing a chemical reaction that made the plastic bottle expand and eventually explode, a process frequently taught in high school science classes.

SPRING: CHEMICAL LEAK AT WAREHOUSE PROMPTS SHELTER-IN-PLACE ORDER FOR NEARBY BUSINESSES
Tags: us_TX, industrial, release, response, unknown_chemical

SPRING, Texas - Several area businesses were ordered to shelter-in-place after a chemical leak at a warehouse complex off the North Freeway Wednesday morning.
It happened in the 22800 block of I-45, on the east side of the freeway.
Fire officials were called to the scene around 8 a.m.
When they arrived, they found a 200-gallon tank leaking an unknown substance inside one of the warehouses.
Two workers at the warehouse reported feeling ill, and they were treated at the scene.

A Florida ice rink was evacuated Wednesday night after the equipment used to keep the facility cold malfunctioned. According to the Associated Press, high levels of carbon monoxide were leaked, causing at least five people to seek treatment at the hospital.

The Clearwater Ice Arena was evacuated, with more than 30 emergency responders turning up at the scene. Visitors complained of lightheadedness as they left the building, and more than a dozen others stayed for evaluation, CNN reported.

Among those sickened were children, including 9-year-old Josh Steele who was transported to Tampa General Hospital after the leak. All victims were reported be in stable condition or released later that night, Central Florida News said.

SEMI CARRYING CLEANING SUPPLIES, ACID OVERTURNS ON RENTON FREEWAY
Tags: us_WA, transportation,release, response, acids

RENTON, Wash. -- Hazardous materials crews were busy early Wednesday morning dealing with a double semi truck that overturned on a Renton freeway.

Troopers say the truck was going from SR-167 onto the northbound lanes of I-405 just before 2 a.m. when it took the corner too fast and the rear trailer overturned.

The truck was carrying cleaning supplies and acid and could have been quite a mess had the chemicals leaked and mixed, but luckily the contents didn't rupture.

Tags: us_TX, transportation,release, response, hydrochloric_acid

SPRING, Texas - Hazmat crews responded to the scene of a chemical spill near an RV sales lot located on Interstate 45 and Spring-Steubner.

Views from Houston Transtar showed several fire trucks on the scene as early as 7 a.m. Wednesday. As of noon, several trucks remained on the scene and the northbound frontage road was still shut down.

The shutdown is expected to last until early afternoon.

When emergency crews first arrived they discovered a hydrochloric acid leak. A passerby told FOX 26 News he saw a yellow cloud above the spill.

Tags: us_OK, transportation,release, response, hydrochloric_acid

The Turner Turnpike wasclosed in both directions between Tulsa and Kellyville, after a semi hauling hydrochloric acid started leaking Wednesday afternoon.
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation and Oklahoma Highway Patrol closed closed the highway for fear fumes may have affected travelers, and evacuations of nearby homes along the turnpike followed.
Hydrochloric acid can create toxic gasses if mixed with water.
The driver of the tanker involved noticed a spill as he was westbound on the Turner Turnpike and contacted authorities about 2:40 p.m.

A petrol tanker that exploded on a California highway burned with such extreme heat it cracked the highway and a concrete overpass.

The tanker caught fire on the 60 Freeway underneath the Paramount Boulevard in Montebello yesterday about noon (US time).

All lanes of the freeway were closed as about 200 firefighters sprayed chemical foam for nearly three hours to douse the double tanker.

The driver and a passenger escaped without injuries but a firefighter suffered a fractured leg and was taken to hospital.
