As the ACS Graduate & Postdoctoral Scholars Office (GPSO, www.acs.org/grad) continues to reach out to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars, we need your continued partnership to inform them of the benefits of joining their ACS Technical Divisions. Our joint efforts over the past few years have included your cosponsorship and participation in ACS Graduate & Postdoctoral Scholars Receptions at ACS national meetings, and listing division awards and fellowships in the free monthly publication, the ACS Graduate & Postdoctoral Scholars Bulletin, www.acs.org/gradbulletin. If you have not yet subscribed to the Bulletin I would urge you and your division officers to do so by responding to this email.

The Graduate Student & Postdoc Reception, held at the Fall 2011 National Meeting in Denver, again attracted more than 700 students and postdocs, was an excellent networking opportunity, and provided a venue for you to showcase the benefits of becoming a division member. I would like to thank those divisions that have sponsored the event in the past and inform you of the receptions to be held prior to Sci-Mix at the next two national meetings:

Monday, March 26, 7:00 – 8:30 PM (San Diego Convention Center, Ballroom 20 B/C – please arrive by 6:30 p.m.)

Monday, August 20, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. (Philadelphia Convention Center, location TBD)

We invite your division to partner with us again by cosponsoring the receptions, and sending representatives to provide information about your divisional activities, in order to solicit interest in joining your division.  Each division will have its own, highboy table with a sign indicating the division name, from where your representatives can network with graduate students and postdocs. Your personal presence, along with nominal and financial cosponsorships, will again be very much appreciated.

Spring 2012 ACS National Meeting – Wednesday, February 29, 2012

GPSO regularly publishes division symposia of interest to graduate students and postdocs for every national meeting in the March and August issues of the Bulletin. Furthermore, GPSO continues to build a database of opportunities from ACS Divisions that are available to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. We will continue to promote these opportunities in a timely fashion to over 22,000 subscribers of the ACS Graduate & Postdoctoral Scholars Bulletin. I encourage you to continue sending us information throughout the year about programs, symposia, awards, and fellowships that are of particular interest to graduate students or postdoctoral scholars, to GradEd**At_Symbol_Here**acs.org.

On behalf of the, newly renamed, ACS Graduate and Postdoctoral Scholars Office (GPSO), this seems like an appropriate time of year to be extending a big “Thank You” for all that you do for graduate students and postdocs.

As you may be aware, GPSO has been reaching out to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars by informing them of the benefits of interacting with ACS Technical Divisions. These efforts have included organizing a reception at every ACS national meeting, and listing division awards and fellowships in an “Opportunities Section”, in the monthly ACS Graduate & Postdoctoral Scholars Bulletin http://www.acs.org/gradbulletin.

The Graduate & Postdoctoral Scholars Reception at the Fall 2011 National Meeting in Denver attracted more than 500 participants, and was an excellent networking opportunity. I would like to extend a special thank you to those divisions that cosponsored the event, and to the division representatives that were in attendance. Without your support and participation, this event would not be possible. I will be reaching out to all divisions again in 2012 to encourage participation in this reception. At the Denver reception, we showcased what ACS has to offer to graduate students and postdocs in a brief video presentation that is now available at www.acs.org/grad. The video presentation also informs graduate students and postdocs of the importance of interacting with their divisions.

In the New Year, I will be sending out another reminder about the upcoming receptions at the spring and fall 2012 ACS national meetings. In the meantime, could you please share with us your division’s events, awards or any other opportunities of relevance to graduate students and postdocs? We are compiling this information into a regularly updated spreadsheet, used to advertise your opportunities through the ACS Graduate and Postdoctoral Scholars Bulletin, which is emailed to over 21,000 graduate students and postdoctoral scholars monthly.
