Dave,
To add to the discussion of appropriate lab attire, we have a plastic storage tub of clothing in assorted sizes,and loan these to students who otherwise would not be albe to do their labs because of inappropriate attire. The selection is mostly sweat pants, long-sleeved shirts, and deck-type shoes. I take the clothes home and wash them once a semester.
The students have begun to refer to these as "the clothes of shame," and we very seldom loan them to the same student twice.
