Mahwah Hazmat crews cleaned up a spill of Hydrochloric acid in a sanitation truck on Seneca Road in Franklin Lakes, Mahwah Assistant Fire Chief Brad Stio said Tuesday afternoon.
"Sanitation crews did not know what the substance was at first," Stio said. Mahwah crews were called in to assist Franklin Lakes PD and fire crews.
"We got a call from a neighbor after a can in the truck exploded," Franklin Lakes Lt. John Bakelaar said Tuesday morning. He called it a very small burst. Some of the liquid leaked onto the truck in what Bakelaar called "not a huge spill."
One Gaeta recycling employee was treated on the scene after "some of the liquid spilled on him," Bakelaar said. Another employee who was exposed to fumes refused medical treatment, he said.

A recent chemical fire in a Kauai Recycles bin has prompted county officials to remind residents to empty containers of unused product and to rinse containers that contained hazardous substances such as bleach.
Food containers with thick residues should also be rinsed before they are placed in a Kauai Recycles bin, while beverage containers are acceptable without rinsing, the county said Tuesday in a news release.

Parts of northbound US 75 was closed after a tanker truck spill Tuesday night.
Northbound US 75 from State Highway 190 was closed until about 9:30 p.m. after the tanker truck began leaking herbicide in Richardson. The truck leaked about 10 gallons of the chemical.
Plano and Richardson fire department hazmat teams continued to clean up the herbicide late Tuesday night.
Plano police said the liquid chemical in the tanker did not present an airborne threat.

One-hundred-thirty thousand dollars. That's the average hospital cost of treating someone who has suffered burns in a meth lab fireŃ60% more than other burn patients. On top of that, most meth patients are uninsured.
Those figures come from an Associated Press survey of major hospitals in the country's most active meth states, including Kentucky. Dr. Glen Franklin, medical director of the surgical intensive care unit and burn unit at University of Louisville Hospital, says there are several reasons why meth lab burns are more dangerous, starting with the chemicals involved.
Meth utilizes substances like lye, anhydrous ammonia, and ether. When these ingredients ignite, they can produce a fireball that consumes everything and everybody around it. Dr. Franklin says in addition to the damage done to a person's skin, these meth lab fires can also do a tremendous amount of respiratory damage.

Thane, Jul 17 (PTI) Two industrial workers were today severly injured in a fire which broke out in a industrial unit in Wada taluka here, police said. The incident took place around afternoon in Parag Chemicals situated in Sapronde area. The chemical plant, which manufactures thinner used in painting was completely razed and two workers suffered severe burn injuries, they said. Firemen from Bhiwandi were rushed to the location and the flames were put out in two hours. The injured have been admitted to a local hospital for treatment. ONE DEAD AFTER BLAST AT OHIO OIL AND GAS WELL SITE

BOLIVAR -- A storage tank at an oil and gas well site exploded and shot flames at least 50 feet into the air on Monday, killing an employee.
Investigators were trying to determine the cause of the blast, which happened near Bolivar, about 65 miles south of Cleveland. Tuscarawas County coroner Jim Hubert said the employee had been performing maintenance on the tank, which was adjacent to the well. Bolivar Fire and Rescue confirmed the man was painting the tank.
Hubert said the man was "in the immediate vicinity" of the receiving tank for the oil when it exploded. He said a law enforcement officer had to be treated after he was overcome by the petroleum fumes from the explosion.
Nathan Mutschelknaus, an employee at a nearby group home, told the Times Reporter in the Dover-New Philadelphia area that he felt the ground shake and looked toward the oil well. Mutschelknaus said the cover of the storage tank shot about 100 feet into the air and fuel leaked down a driveway and into a field.

KOLKATA: Students working in the chemistry laboratory of St Joseph's School at Bowbazar in central Kolkata had a narrow escape when the gas cylinder that fuels the Bunsen burners in the laboratory exploded on Monday morning.
The blast was so powerful that it blew a hole about ft by 1ft through a solid brick and concrete wall. Luckily, the force of the explosion was directed outwards because the chamber was close to a kindergarten class that was packed with children. It was a miracle no one was injured even in the lab.
The explosion at 9.20am terrified children and teachers, who began an immediate evacuation of the entire block. The teachers rushed out of the classrooms thinking an LPG cylinder had exploded in the school compound. They did not realize then that what had happened could have been far more dangerous.
"The gas plant was set up to feed the burners in the chemistry laboratory. The explosion would have proved deadly if it had come in contact with some of the combustible chemicals in the laboratory. Thankfully, it didn't happen. The noise and suddenness of the blast were enough to make us all panicky. The gas chamber was running well since morning until the explosion happened," said Brother Christopher.

Fire crews were called to the incident in Louvigne Close in Burnham on Saturday afternoon.
Household cleaning chemicals had been accidentally mixed together and the products were letting off fumes into the air. Fire fighters used breathing apparatus to search for the chemical containers and then made them safe.
One casualty was taken to hospital.

Hazmat were called to Binghamton General Hospital to deal with the aftermath of a chemical spill Monday evening.
A hospital spokesperson says around 5:00PM a barrel of organic peroxide was punctured by a fork lift.
That spill was cleaned up, and the leftover material was transferred to another container and put on a loading dock near the emergency room.
Sometime before 9:00PM, the remaining chemicals began giving off smoke, and some of that smoke got into the hospital's ventilation system.
That smell caused emergency room patients to be moved to the observation ward.

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service crews have located the source of a chemical leak at the Port of Brisbane that has hospitalised four workers this morning.
Firefighters were called to Curlew Street, Port of Brisbane at 6am this morning after the four workers complained of nausea and headaches.
``Four patients who were exposed to the smell of the chemical substance were transported for precaution to Princess Alexandra Hospital,'' a QFRS spokesperson said.
A 50m exclusion zone is still in place around the area and six containers on board a ship as well as four containers in the holding yard have been tested.
The leak has been isolated to one of the containers in the yard with the ship cleared of any spillage.

The Department of Agriculture got another scare Monday night as picric acid was found for the second time in two months. Once again, the bomb squad had to be called in to detonate it.
It was discovered around 5 p.m., and a few minutes before 8 p.m. crews closed off part of nearby Cameron Street and detonated the acid in a field nearby. People on scene could hear the boom.
However, the amount of picric acid found this time was about 1/4 of what was found last time.
Since the discovery came around 5 p.m. few people were inside the building. Capital Police, fire crews, the State Police Bomb Squad and the Department of General Services did respond.

JACKKNIFED TRUCK SPILLS SULFURIC ACID

A truck driver lost control at Miramar Road and Carroll Road early Monday closing down several streets and leaking approximately 30 gallons of diesel fuel and sulfuric acid on the street according to San Diego Fire Hazmat.
The driver behind the wheel of a truck carrying 150 pounds of what's called Flammable 3 and sulfuric acid lost control around 3 a.m. just west of the Miramar golf course and north of MCAS Miramar.
Investigators say the driver was reaching for fruit on the floor of the truck when he lost control and drove the truck up onto a sidewalk.
When the driver tried to correct the vehicle, the double trailers started swinging back and forth and ultimately tipped over police said.
When the truck was turned upright, about 4 hours later, sulfuric acid was spilled according to Captain Robin Cervantes.
