The Point Pleasant Borough Recycling Center will be closed until Friday morning as police continue to investigate the dumping of pesticides and chemicals into household trash, police said.

The recycling center became the scene of a HAZMAT clean-up operation after two sanitation workers became sickened just after picking up trash at Curtis Avenue and Cedar Street Thursday morning.

The two workers were treated by the Point Boro First Aid Squad and released and did not need hospitalization, Fire Chief Daniel Mulligan had said at the scene.

The workers for Roselli, the private sanitation company that picks up the Borough's trash, alerted public works after they became ill. Public works contacted the police department, which called in the fire department and then the Berkeley Township HAZMAT unit.

Eleven mobile homes were evacuated this morning in Indian Creek Village in Lower Macungie Township after chemicals mixed together and formed a vapor cloud, borough secretary Renea Flexer reports.

The township fire department was called to Hartford Court near Indian Creek Road, but did not find a fire. The incident has been turned over to Pennsylvania State Police at Fogelsville for investigation, Flexer said.

Fourteen people were temporarily housed at the township community center at 3450 Brookside Road, Flexer said.

Seven adults fell ill and four were hospitalized Thursday after they were exposed to an unknown substance inside the emergency room at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health.

The four patients were taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital and Wishard Memorial Hospital for treatment, said Wishard spokesman Todd Harper.

Riley spokeswoman Abigail Gras said all of the patients had been released or would be released Thursday evening.

An Indianapolis Fire Department hazardous materials team responded to a call around 11:50 a.m. Thursday about a possible chemical spill inside the emergency room. Department spokesman Lt. Derrick Sayles later said there wasn't a chemical spill, but staff members confirmed there was an odd smell.

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A chemical spill Thursday morning at the Knox County veterans home in Karns sent nine staff members to hospitals.

Nine members of the cleaning and laundry staff at Ben Atchley State Veteran's Home at One Veterans Way suffered respiratory problems after they mixed chemicals that produced a chlorine-like vapor.

Fire crews got the call at 9:45 a.m.

"They had mixed two chemicals," explained Karns Volunteer Fire Chief Ken Marston. "It was a bleach and a cleaning solution which they felt were the same and compatible and unfortunately when they were poured together, they created a reaction. That chemical reaction releases a chlorine gas that's an irritant to the lungs."

The injured have been taken to a local hospital for treatment, Li said, adding that their injuries are not life-threatening.

An initial investigation indicated that the blast was caused by a gas leak, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -
At least 22 Kirby High School students were treated by first responders after a bottle of hydrochloric acid was thrown down a hallway, said Lt. Wayne Cook of the Memphis Fire Department.

The high school students complained of eye irritation and headaches shortly before 1 p.m.

Once outside the students started to feel better.

Lt. Cook said the liquid substance in the bottle was positively identified as hydrochloric acid after five hours of analysis by their Hazmat crew.

It was reportedly brought to the school by a high school student.

Some students who were treated said it smelled like a smoke bomb.

Several parents were alerted to what took place and took their children to area hospitals for treatment.

Emergency crews closed down 9th Avenue near 2nd Street SW for a few hours Wednesday night as they investigated a mysterious brown liquid leaking from the Calgary Tower.

Duty Inspector Paul Stacey tells 660News around 10 p.m. police received a call that the substance was raining down onto vehicles and accumulating on the street below.

It's believed the substance was significant enough that it fell across all the lanes on 9th Avenue.

Hazmat crews were called in and the area was reopened shortly after midnight.

The mystery substance turned out to be nothing more than water mixed with antifreeze from a broken boiler at the top of the tower.

One employee was injured Tuesday night in a chemical spill at a west Charlotte plant, fire officials say.

The incident happened shortly after 9 p.m. at Emerald Performance Materials, in the 8300 block of Wilkinson Boulevard. Crews from the West Mecklenburg Fire Department were called to deal with an acid spill inside the plant, which produces additives and processing aids for food, rubber, coatings and other uses.

The Charlotte Fire Department's Haz-Mat team was called to the scene, and crews quickly controlled the leak.

Authorities say the chemical involved was trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, or triflic acid. According to broadcast reports Wednesday morning, a leaking pipe caused the spill.

PUPILS at Stonelaw High had to evacuate the school buildings following a chemical spill last week.
It prompted scenes which one onlooker described as looking like: "something out of a disaster movie" as Strathclyde Fire and Rescue attended, wearing hazardous material suits and later having them hosed down.
The incident was prompted after Strathclyde Fire and Rescue mobilised crews to the Rutherglen school following reports of a small chemical spill in the science department at 2.20pm, with the 1047 pupils on the roll having to leave the building.

A 30-year-old Three Rivers man who was injured in an explosion Monday afternoon has died, according to the Three Rivers Police Department.
The victim was hurt in a garage at a residence in the 100 block of South Andrews Street, where a chemical reaction during the production of methamphetamine resulted in an explosion, police said. The victim was airlifted to Bronson Hospital, where he died of burn-related injuries.
Investigators on Tuesday confirmed their suspicion that the manufacturing of meth caused the explosion. Law-enforcement is looking for a man who fled the scene on foot after the explosion.

(Memphis) Two Penn A Kem workers remain hospitalized after being badly burned in a chemical explosion Monday.
Neighbors of the plant say the workers aren't the only victims.
Fire officials assured the public there was no health risk after the explosion, but at least one woman says she's been dealing with health issues ever since.
"My eyes were burning. I called my doctor because my head was hurting, I had pains in my chest, I was getting light-headed," said Mia Peete.
Peete made it through the day, but when she began feeling sick again, she went to the emergency room where she was treated for chemical inhalation.
Specifically, for exposure to furfurylamine, one of two chemicals involved in the explosion.
"They did a chest x-ray and that's when they found the chemical inhalation. They administered like three drugs intravenously and they gave me a breathing treatment," said Peete.
Fire officials say as far as they know, the chemicals in the explosion were confined to the plant, and saw no need Monday to evacuate any homes nearby.
