Dear Wayne -

The LBNL has an excellent guide for laser lab design:

http://esh-docdb.fnal.gov/cgi-bin/RetrieveFile?docid=2075;filename=Laser%20Laboratory%20Design%20Guide.pdf;version=1

I believe that the chief author (Ken Barat, now retired from LBNL) does consulting work in this area if you are interested.

A key reference for research labs is the recently released standard:

ANSI Z136.8 (2012) Safe Use of Lasers in Research, Development, or Testing

Also, be aware that there are standards for laser barriers (see ANSI Z136.7-2008 Testing and Labeling of Laser Protective Equipment). The major laser barrier suppliers (for example, Kentek and Rockwell) can help you with selection to meet the standards.

Hello all,

We are in the processing of constructing a new lab building.  We will be using class IV and class III lasers.  Does anyone have standard regarding the outfitting of the lab (with safety curtains to divide the rooms)?  Where can I find the standard.

Thanks,
