LINCOLN PARK ? A student who witnessed a science experiment go wrong inside Lincoln Park High School's chemistry lab Monday morning said watching a classmate's sweater catch fire was the "scariest thing ever."

"She was so scared. She was crying," said Judy Eng, a sophomore at the high school.

Eng said her science teacher was demonstrating a lab experiment for the class, which the students were scheduled to conduct Tuesday.

Just before noon, the teacher attempted to ignite a small amount of methanol in a bowl with a match, but there was not enough of the chemical to produce a flame the whole class could see, Eng said.

The teacher then put more methanol in the bowl, Eng said. The problem was the match was still burning in the bowl and the additional methanol caused the flames to go "out of control," she said.

The flames spread quickly to another lab table and ignited a girl's sweater.

The teacher had to pull the burning sweater off the student and rushed her into a safety shower, Eng said.

A Chicago Fire Department official said the 16-year-old girl was wearing eye protection, but suffered second-degree burns on her face and her abdomen.

RIVERVIEW, Fla. (AP) ? Two people are hospitalized with minor injuries after an acid tank exploded at a Tampa Bay-area phosphate plant.

According to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, the explosion occurred during routine maintenance of the empty tank at the Riverview plant.

A lid on the tank flew about 100 feet in the air before crashing to the ground. Fire Rescue spokeswoman Jessica Damico tells the Tampa Bay Times (http://bit.ly/17F1MLK">http://bit.ly/17F1MLK) that one worker who had been standing on the structure was struck in the chest by shrapnel. Another worker on the ground also was injured.

Authorities say two employees were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

It's not clear what caused the explosion.

HAZMAT CLEANUP TAKES HOURS AFTER DEADLY WISCONSIN CRASH OF AMMONIA TRUCK

A crash between a semi truck loaded with ammonia and a tow truck Monday on Highway 11 in rural Shullsburg killed one driver and sent Hazmat teams scrambling to contain the toxic cargo.

The cleanup lasted into Tuesday morning, and the highway didn't fully reopen until about 7:30 a.m., according to the state Department of Transportation.

The crash happened around noon Monday after the tow truck, driven by Steven Humphrey, 54, of Shullsberg, skidded onto the highway at an intersection because of slippery snow, the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office said. He crashed into the semi, driven by Alfred Rott, 58, of Monona, and both vehicles ended up in the ditch.

Rott died at the scene, while Humphrey was treated for his injuries at a hospital.

The semi, which fell over in the crash, was loaded with anhydrous or commercial ammonia, which is toxic. Hazmat teams from neighboring Wisconsin and Illinois counties responded, and the cargo was transferred to another truck.

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -
A special HAZMAT team from Columbia has been called in to the College of Charleston after liquids found on the roof of a dorm are consistent with meth-making materials.

Charleston firefighters along with Charleston Police and College of Charleston Public Safety officers were called out to the George Street Apartments after 1 am Wednesday morning. We're told by Mike Robertson, a spokesman for the College of Charleston, that an employee at the CVS on the corner of George and St. Phillip streets called the college about a liquid leaking into the store. The college was notified as the pharmacy is located beneath the George Street Apartments.

Robertson tells Live 5 that Residence Life employees found two 1-liter bottles of an unknown liquid. That's when Residence Life notified police. Just before 5am, crews on scene were able to determine that the liquid found was consist ant with meth-making materials. Agents with the State Law Enforcement Division has been called in as well as a special HAZMAT team from Columbia.

BUILDING CLOSED AFTER CHEMICAL SPILL AT AUGUSTANA

A chemical spill closed an academic building at Augustana College today.

A student was working in a chemistry lab stockroom during a medicinal chemistry class, when the bottom of a glass container filled with pyridine gave out. Sioux Falls Fire Rescue arrived on scene just before 11:30 a.m. Tuesday with four units, including a hazardous materials trailer, Battalion Chief Edward Van Egdom said.

The student immediately went to the lab's emergency shower, Augustana senior Kyle Knapp said. Van Egdom said an instructor attempted to contain and neutralize the spill with sodium biocarbonate, but as Knapp told KSFY, the chemical started to fumigate and spread throughout the building.

"They wanted to get people out of the building because you could smell it all the way down the hall," Knapp said.

The student was evaluated on scene by Rural Metro ambulance and transported privately for further evaluation by an emergency room physician. He was treated and released, Van Egdom said.

The building was closed because pyridine, when not in a controlled environment, acts as a respiratory irritant. SFFR technicians monitored the building's air quality and found readings that could have affected the health of students, Van Egdom said.

FIRE CREWS RESPOND TO 3V CHEMICAL PLANT IN GEORGETOWN

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Midway Fire Rescue responded to assist Georgetown County fire crews that are responding to an incident at the 3V Chemical Corp.

Chief Doug Eggiman says early reports from the scene on Woodstock Street indicated that there was an explosion and one person may be trapped in an elevator shaft.

But Georgetown County's Director of Emergency Services Sam Hodge says there was no explosion. He confirmed to sister station in Charleston that four 55-gallon drums fell over at the chemical plant, and spilled the chemical contents. There was no contamination outside of the plant, and emergency management officials have contained the spill inside.

One person was transported to the hospital, but the extent of injuries is unknown. Midway Fire sent a Technical Rescue and Hazmat team. Stay tuned for more details as they become available.
