ADAMS ‰?? A co-owner of Berry Bros. Lumber Co. on Route 11 died Wednesday night as a result of a chemical reaction in a hazardous materials incident at the site.
The Jefferson County Sheriff‰??s Department confirmed early today that Gary J. Berry, 54, of Adams, died at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, after the accident, which occurred about 5:30 p.m. Emergency crews shut down Route 11 for five hours Wednesday night as they tried to determine what happened and what chemicals were involved.
An employee and Mr. Berry were working about 200 feet behind a building on the property at 9124 Route 11 in the town of Lorraine when chemicals came in contact with each other in a 55-gallon plastic drum, said Robert D. Simpson, Jefferson County deputy fire coordinator.
Talking to reporters about 9 p.m., Mr. Simpson, who also serves as the public information officer for the Adams Fire Department, said the Jefferson County Hazardous Materials Response Team still did not know what chemicals were involved in the accident, what caused it or exactly what the responders were dealing with.

A factory in Dammam‰??s 2nd Industrial City was gutted in a massive fire that broke out in the premises Thursday morning.

A fire-fighter also sustained second degree burn injuries while trying to put out the fire.

Speaking to Arab News, Col. Ali Al-Qahtani, Eastern Province Civil Defense spokesman, said: ‰??The control unit received a call reporting a large fire at the BICF Factory in the 2nd Industrial City at 4:26 a.m.‰??

He said the factory is spread over an area of 15,000 sq. meters. The factory had petrochemical substances for manufacturing industrial floors.

‰??The entire factory was gutted in the fire,‰?? Al-Qahtani said, adding that 14 fire-fighting units were involved in putting out the blaze. ‰??Investigations into the cause of fire are still under way,‰?? he added.

A teacher‰??s chemistry experiment exploded during a demonstration at Beacon High School in Manhattan on Thursday, creating a fireball that burned two 10th graders, one severely, according to Fire Department and school officials.

The incident happened about 9 a.m., as Anna Poole, a science teacher at the public school, gave a lesson on how electrons react to different chemicals and give off different colors, according to students and school officials.

‰??There was a science experiment underway in this classroom and it went bad,‰?? said James Long, a spokesman for the Fire Department. ‰??There were students that were believed to be in the front rows of the classroom, there was a flash of the fire, and they were caught within that flash.‰??

A boy suffered severe burns on his face and neck, and a girl was burned on her hand, officials said. Both were taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Carmen Fari̱a, the new schools chancellor, said that the boy, whom she identified by only his first name, Alonzo, was in serious condition on Thursday afternoon at the hospital, and that the other student, identified as Julia, had been sent home.

When the experiment exploded, students dived under their desks and screamed for help, students in neighboring classrooms said. But the two students sitting near the front were engulfed in flames. Students and teachers helped put the fire out, and it was no longer burning by the time firefighters arrived.

LOS ANGELES ‰?? LOS ANGELES (AP) - Authorities say a leak at a Los Angeles oil refinery sent nearly a dozen workers to the hospital after they were exposed to toxic sulfur dioxide gas.

The Los Angeles Fire Department says the leak was reported at about 10 a.m. at the Phillips 66 refinery in the Wilmington area.

City News Service says 11 people with possible breathing problems were examined at hospitals and released.

After about an hour, authorities reported there was no active leak and no danger to the community.

An explosion and flash fire at a Legacy Resources Natural Gas Compressor Station in Riverton, WY, Christmas Day left one person injured.
‰??There was an obvious explosion as the 30‰?2x30‰?2 compressor station‰??s windows and a large overhead door were all blown out, there was extensive damage inside the building but structurally, the building is still standing,‰?? said Fremont County Fire Protection District Trainer Dan Oakley.
Oakley also said someone ‰??presumably the man burned in the fire,‰?? had attempted to use a dry chemical fire extinguisher to put out the fire. ‰??There was evidence that a fire extinguisher had been used inside the building.‰??
Oakley said the fire persisted from a pressurized natural gas line, and after the gas had been turned off by workers, county fire personnel went in to ‰??cool off the regular combustibles‰?? inside the structure.
The fire occurred in Legacy‰??s North Alkali field, which sits about three to four miles east of the Sand Draw Road ‰??at the corrals,‰?? Oakley said.
Devon Energy Riverton Manager Bill Skelton said several personnel from Devon‰??s Sand Draw location rushed to the scene to assist Legacy personnel after the explosion.

Some 700 litres of a sanitising agent has leaked from a container at a food crate manufacturing site in Melbourne's west.

Firefighters spent more than six hours trying to neutralise the Oxyzan ZS agent and contain the chemical spill, which happened at a factory in Laverton North yesterday afternoon.

Melbourne Fire Brigade spokesman Steve Aicher says about 700 litres leaked through a pump on the container and that firefighters will remove the chemical when it's safe to do so

ASHEVILLE ‰?? City fire crews including a hazardous materials team responded to a chemical spill at a dairy processing plant this morning.

No one was injured, Asheville Fire Department spokeswoman Kelley Klope said.

The spill was reported at about 6:45 a.m. at the Milkco Inc. plant at 220 Deaverview Road. Up to 100 gallons of sodium hydroxide chorine, a cleaning solution, spilled after a line at the plant ruptured, Klope said.

Officials closed Deaverview Road until the spilled chemical was cleaned up at about 9 a.m., Klope said.

A chemical spill at an Upton rail yard has been cleaned up, but some residents say concerns about safety at the site linger.

On Dec. 18, a faulty valve caused approximately 100 gallons of styrene ‰?? a highly flammable chemical used to make plastic-foam packaging material ‰?? to spill at the Grafton & Upton Railroad yard at 25 Maple Ave. Local and state public safety and environmental workers responded to the scene, and the town‰??s nearby waste-water treatment plant was evacuated.

Upton Fire Chief Aaron Goodale said his department received complaints about the smell of the chemical from residents for a couple of days, and that some Department of Public Works employees experienced burning eyes and headaches at the site. But, he said, the spill occurred on land protected by an impermeable barrier, and the tainted gravel and topsoil have been removed.

A fire Sunday night forced the closing of Atmel Corp.'s semi-conductor manufacturing operation on Colorado Springs' south side, a company spokesman said Tuesday.
....
A nitrogen gas intake line that serves the semi-conductor operation caught fire Sunday night, Schumann said. He wasn't sure if the fire occurred on the inside or outside of the building.

The semi-conductor portion of the plant was evacuated, Schumann said; an unknown number of employees were forced to leave, although operations are usually light around this time of the year, he said.

WILMINGTON, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Hazmat crews were investigating a sulfur dioxide leak at the Phillips 66 refinery in Wilmington Tuesday.

The leak was reported on the 1660 block of West Anaheim Street around 10:15 a.m.

According to Los Angeles City firefighters, at least 11 employees were transported in fair condition to local area hospitals for minor respiratory issues.

Other workers were told to shelter-in-place inside buildings.

The problem was localized within the grounds of the refinery around 11 a.m. LAFD officials said there was no active leak and that the incident did not pose immediate danger to the surrounding community.

Air monitoring showed no health threat shortly after the accident, and none of the workers were admitted into a hospital.

"All other refinery employees and contract workers have been accounted for and are safe. The area has been secured and the refinery is running under normal operations," said Phillips 66 spokesman Rich Johnson.

A fire that burned for four hours Tuesday at a pipeline facility in La Porte was blamed for two injuries before being extinguished, officials said.

Two contractors were treated for minor injuries from the blaze at a barge-loading facility at Morgan's Point owned by pipeline giant Enterprise Products Partners, company spokesman Rick Rainey said. The contractors were treated and released, he said.

The fire began about 10:30 a.m., La Porte police said. The flames were extinguished about 2:30 p.m., Rainey said.

Natural gas liquids, such as propane and butane, were ignited in the blaze, although it was unclear how the fire began, Rainey said. The La Porte Fire Department extinguished the blaze, which halted operations at the facility, he said.

The Morgan's Point facility loads natural gas liquids and crude oil onto barges at rates of up to 5,000 barrels per hour. The barges move these products between U.S. ports, Rainey said. The facility remained offline Tuesday afternoon, although pipelines owned by other companies that move through the facility had restarted, he said.

A judge says a Chicago-area chemical company can't restart a manufacturing unit involved in an explosion and fire until it figures out what happened.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says the Cook County judge on Tuesday granted a preliminary injunction against Blue Island Phenol in suburban Alsip. It requires the company to investigate the cause of the Dec. 13 explosion and fire that injured two workers and identify corrective measures.

Madigan says the company also must investigate potential soil and groundwater contamination caused by the runoff of water used to extinguish the fire, and dispose of asbestos-containing material affected by the fire.

The company must report its findings to Madigan's office and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.
