HAZMAT CALLED TO ENON NEIGHBORHOOD

ENON, Ohio (WDTN)- Part of an Enon neighborhood was blocked off for five hours on Saturday after a routine medical call turned into a hazmat situation.
EMS crews were dispatched to Cardinal Drive around 2 p.m., but officials told 2 NEWS after they entered they home they found chemicals on the back porch.
Mad River-Enon Fire Chief Tracy Young said the homeowner?s grandson was mixing different chemicals together to clean metals.
Additional crews worked to contain the chemicals and make them safe.
No one was hurt and the Chief Young said any danger to the surrounding homes was minimal.
He said this is a reminder that you should never mix chemicals because you could create a potentially dangerous combination.

CHARLESTON ? Tests conducted more than two weeks after a chemical spill tainted the water supply for 300,000 West Virginians show the presence of the chemical remains in five schools, state officials said Friday.
The state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management released the results of samples taken from tap water at 94 schools in five counties.
Most of the samples collected Tuesday and Wednesday were taken from Kanawha County.

Things are back to normal for a George's chicken plant, after an ammonia leak forced dozens to evacuate.
Some employees were standing outside for nearly four hours.
What should have been a normal day at this plant on Friday, turned into an unusual scene.
"Saturday night, they were suppose to be switching out the ammonia in the coolers. We were suppose to empty all the chicken and put them on trailers," said Kristoffer George who is an employee at George's chicken plant.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. ? A small fire Friday afternoon in the insulation of a tank at the Ecolab plant east of Martinsburg resulted in an acid leak, causing the evacuation of nearby residents and delaying the release of dozens of students from school, officials said.
No one was injured, and operations had resumed at the plant at 942 Baker Road by Friday night, according to emergency and Ecolab officials.
?Could have been worse, just glad it wasn?t,? Berkeley County Sheriff Kenneth Lemaster said.
Glacial acetic acid leaked from a 10,000-gallon above-ground tank into a concrete-containment area as a result of the fire, but the chemical did not leave the premises, Lemaster and company spokesman Roman Blahoski said.

DEP OFFICIAL: NO MCHM REACHED RIVER IN 2ND FREEDOM INCIDENT

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Contractors at the Freedom Industries tank farm along the Elk River hit an underground pipe Thursday night, releasing more Crude MCHM and, with it, more of the strong, black-licorice odor into the surrounding air.
None of the chemical that spilled ended up in the Elk River, a state official said Friday.
The incident occurred at about 6 p.m., said Mike Dorsey, director of emergency response and homeland security for the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection.
"It wasn't so much of an incident," Dorsey said. "None of the stuff got into the river."
Dorsey said whatever MCHM was released was held within a "cutoff trench" crews dug to try to block any contaminated material from the site from leaching into the river.

ALBANY - When Albany firefighters arrived at Building 12 on the Harriman State Office Campus Thursday night, they found two workers down, and a huge, 500 pound pressurized container of halon nearby on the back loading dock.
"To a lay person, it could be construed as explosion, but there was NO catastrophic failure of the cylinder itself," said Paul Martin, Chief of Inspections and Investigations at the Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services at the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control.
Martin says during removal from the building, the tank valve was damaged and began to discharged, and unfortunately the two men, Carlton Smith and Michael Lambertsen, who work for a private company, wound up in the inadvertent line of fire suppression.
"Gas, as it's released, is very cold," Martin says, "That resulted in the thermal burns to the (men)."
Because of its cold properties, halon has long been the chemical of choice in fire suppression systems, especially effective in computer room settings.

A lab fire at the University of Windsor forced students to evacuate Essex Hall on Thursday.
According to the Windsor fire department, the blaze broke out around 4 p.m. and was confined to a single classroom.
Firefighters extinguished the fire and worked to remove smoke from the hall. No one was injured, and damage is estimated at $25,000.
The cause is being listed as a chemical reaction that occurred while cleaning the lab.

Campus officials evacuated the sixth floor of Tan Hall following a chemical spill Thursday evening.
A student was working with the chemical ? which Berkeley Fire Department identified as a two-liter bottle of 37 percent hydrochloric acid solution ? when it spilled, according to John Ruiz, emergency management coordinator for the UC Berkeley Office of Emergency Preparedness. Two other students were in a different room on the floor at the time of the spill.
BFD responded about 7:45 p.m., and about an hour later, the Office of Emergency Preparedness arrived on scene to neutralize the spill, using sodium bicarbonate and absorptive pads. Officials do not believe any of the chemical got down the drain and said fume hoods were on at the time of the spill, providing some ventilation.
As of 10 p.m., all the labs on the sixth floor were closed, although they are scheduled to reopen Friday morning, Ruiz said.

PETROLIA, Pa. (AP) ? Nobody was injured when a storage tank at a western Pennsylvania petroleum processing plant caught fire.
The fire at the Sonneborn Corp. plant in Petrolia was reported about 3 a.m. Friday. The plant is located about 50 miles north of Pittsburgh.
The company makes waxes and other products including petrolatum, which is used in baby oil and petroleum jellies.
Anita Orozco, the company's director of human resources, says crews were still trying to determine what tank burned and why. She says the tank was burning from the top, which suggests some kind of was might have caught fire.
A fire alarm summoned company and local volunteer firefighters, who quickly controlled the fire.
