We are a small college located halfway between Seattle and Portland, and are within 2 hours of Mt. Rainier, Mt St Helens and the coast/beaches.  Our new Science Department opened in 2009, and the labs and equipment are wonderful!

Summary

Who May Apply:
Centralia College is recruiting for the position of Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 3 for a current opening for one 35-hour per week position in the Chemistry Lab. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.

 

Position Description:

Under general supervision of the Dean of Instruction, Academic Transfer, this position is responsible for providing instructional support for the Chemistry lab and stockroom areas including preparing and modifying teaching aids, materials and equipment associated with classroom and laboratory instruction. The position will include the responsibilities of Chemical Hygiene Officer for Centralia College.

 

The successful candidate will have the following responsibilities:

  • Maintain chemistry laboratory and storage areas including chemicals, tools, and equipment.
  • Determine need for materials, equipment and instruments necessary for assigned course loads.
  • Order or procure necessary items and maintain inventory records.
  • Receive materials and supplies used in classes and store appropriately.
  • Prepare and set up equipment, materials, and solutions for chemistry demonstrations and laboratory experiments using appropriate safety procedures in handling hazardous materials such as acids, solvents, etc.
  • Oversee proper inventory, storage, labeling, and disposal of chemicals.
  • Oversee student workers in the chemistry lab.
  • Monitor laboratories to ensure that safety policies are followed and participate in the development of safe laboratory procedures.
  • Update the Chemical Hygiene plan annually in coordination with the Chemical Hygiene Administrator.
  • Maintain records of MSDS sheets.
  • Perform the regulatory duties of Chemical Hygiene Officer as set forth by Centralia College.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum:

  • BA or BS degree in chemistry and two years’ experience as an Instruction & Classroom Support Tech 2 OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Training in chemical practices and the ability to prepare specific solutions.
  • Knowledge of safe handling and storage of chemicals.

Preference will be given to those candidates with significant coursework in general chemistry, organic chemistry, and/or quantative analysis; previous experience with the operation, support, and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation; previous experience in Chemical Hygiene Plan preparation and implementation; and proficiency with MS Office.
