Subject: [DCHAS-L] Laboratory Inspections

A few questions asked by our Administration:

1.       What is the frequency of EH&S –led laboratory inspections for those of you in large  academic research institutions? 4-10 risk based quality assurance visits per lab/year from various EH&S disciplines depending on lab operations

2.       # of EHS staff whose primary role is inspections? 6  Safety & Compliance Advisors (plus staff in other EH&S technical groups (e.g., HP, Biosafety, Fire Safety)

        3.  Are Individual PI’s or Departments required to inspect  their labs?  Yes, PIs  or their designate are required to conduct self-inspections.  How often?  Quarterly for general laboratory inspections [+ specialty self inspections as appropriate (e.g.,  quarterly health physics, quarterly select agent toxins, quarterly controlled substances, monthly for chemical storage areas, weekly for waste accumulation areas.]

Thanks,
