Subject: [DCHAS-L] 1 hood = 3 American houses

Demystify:

I saw it again today: “Ventilation is the largest user of energy in labs:  One fume hood is the equivalent of 3 households”

I have never questioned this. In fact, I teach it & it makes people sit up & pay attention (when we look around at 6 hoods in one lab, then think about how many labs we have on campus!)

Now I need to ask – does anyone have a source for this item? How old is it? Is it still true? Is there a new number/estimate to account for VAV hoods?
