Tags: us_CA, industrial, release, injury, unknown_chemical

CORONADO " Four construction workers and a police officer were overcome by chemical fumes at a construction site in Coronado Friday morning, police said.

A construction worker collapsed in the basement of a house being built at G and Olive avenues near 9th Street about 10 a.m., Carlsbad police said. Several workers rushed to his side.

Shortly after officers arrived, three other workers were overcome by the fumes. Officers cleared the area.

As medics treated the affected workers, the first officer who had arrived showed the same symptoms as the other victims, police said.

The five were taken to hospitals. The officer was later released, police Capt. Jesus Ochoa said. An update on the worker"s condition was not available.

Hazardous materials crews were called out. They determined unsafe levels of the chemicals were still present in a small portion of the basement.

Tags: us_FL, public, release, death, unknown_chemical

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. "
Two people died Thursday as a result of an incident involving an unknown hazardous material in a vehicle on the Turnpike in south Osceola County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Osceola County Sheriff"s Office deputies said that at about 3:15 p.m. a trooper found a white Porsche Cayenne on the Turnpike near mile marker 224 with two people dead inside.

The vehicle had sustained minor damage when it hit a guardrail in the median.

"There was minor damage to the vehicle. We don"t believe the cause of death was due to the car crash," said Twis Lizasuain of the Osceola County Sheriff"s Office.

A trooper and two deputies were briefly hospitalized after being exposed to an unknown substance inside the vehicle.

"He got close to the vehicle, realized he had been exposed to an unknown substance. The two deputies that went to assist him were also exposed," said Lizasuain.

SUSPICIOUS CHEMICAL IN TRASH BELIEVED TO BE FROM MOBILE METH LAB
Tags: us_WI, public, release, injury, meth_lab

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WBAY) " Fond du Lac Police are investigating a mobile meth lab discovered in the garbage can at a gas station. The incident required the help of a hazmat team.

At around 12:30am on Friday, a man picking through a garbage can at a BP station on the corner of West Scott Street and Military Road found something in the trash that sent him to the hospital for treatment.

According to Assistant Chief Steve Klein with the Fond du Lac Police Department, "He came across a two liter bottle, was in a plastic bag and tied off. When he picked it up it gave off some type of powder that got on his face, caused some type of irritation."

Tags: United_Kingdom, industrial, release, injury, bleach

A man has been taken to hospital after 150 litres of cleaning fluid was spilled in south London today.

An industrial area in Sidcup has been evacuated after bleach and cleaning fluids were leaked at a builders' warehouse.

Emergency services were called to reports of a chemical spillage around 11.45 this morning.

Martin Peaple, 27, who arrived at the scene shortly after the crash, said: "A member of staff told me a pallet of chemicals fell off some racking and they"ve hit the floor and reacted.

"I"ve seen two people be taken away by an ambulance and some people are still being treated here."

CHEMICALS MUST TAKE 'CENTRE STAGE' IN CIRCULAR ECONOMY DISCUSSIONS
Tags: Finland, public, discovery, environmental

It is time chemicals took centre stage in discussions on the development of a circular economy, according to Joanna Drake, deputy director general of the European Commission's environment directorate.
Speaking on the final day of last week's Helsinki Chemicals Forum, Ms Drake said circular economy discussions must focus on secondary raw materials, not just primary products.
But this, she said, would require improvements in tracking the presence of hazardous substances in the recycling stream. Something that is proving a "challenge".
Last year, the European Commission said its circular economy action plan included measures to "overcome unnecessary barriers" presented by hazardous chemicals, without compromising health and environmental protection.
According to Ms Drake, one of the Commission's actions is to prepare a strategic approach to chemicals. This will decide the "right course of action to facilitate traceability and the risk management of chemicals in the recycling process."

JUDGE POSTPONES WEST EXPLOSION TRIAL AFTER ATF ANNOUNCEMENT
Tags: us_TX, public, follow-up, environmental, explosives, illegal

The judge presiding over the West explosion litigation granted a defense motion Friday to postpone the next trial on the heels of a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives announcement last month that the fire that preceded the explosion was a criminal act.
Over objections from plaintiffs" attorneys, 170th State District Judge Jim Meyer agreed to postpone the latest trial setting from July 25 to early January.
Meyer denied a defense request to stay the proceedings for at least six months, which would have put all activity in the cases on hold, including the taking of depositions and other trial preparations.

CHEMICAL SPILL REPORTED AT ENGINEERING BUILDING
Tags: us_OH, laboratory, release, response, unknown_chemical

A chemical spill was reported at the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Chemistry building at Ohio State on Friday afternoon.
"Chemical spill at CBEC. (Columbus Fire Department) and (University Police) are on scene," read a tweet from OSU Emergency Management posted at 4:36 p.m.
However, Dan Hedman, a spokesman for the Office of Administration and Planning, said just before 9 p.m. that no chemical spill had occurred. He added that the Environmental Health and Safety Office, which was on the scene, had concluded that a malfunctioning hot plate was to blame.
"A malfunctioning hot plate inside what"s called a "glove box" created an abnormal reaction," Hedman said in an email.
Jessica Winter, a professor in chemical engineering and biomedical engineering, said two graduate students working in CBEC called her when they noticed something was unusual.
When the hot plate was malfunctioning, they thought the chemical inside the glovebox, Tellurium, was oxidizing and heating up.
Worried about a potential fire, Winter instructed them to call University Police.

CHEMICAL FIRE FORCES EVACUATIONS, HAZMAT RESPONSE
Tags: us_GA, industrial, fire, response, chlorine

A chemical fire at a Rockdale County business prompted authorities to evacuate residences and call out a hazmat team early Saturday.

About 4:30 a.m., a 911 caller reported smoke and a chemical smell coming from BioLab on Old Covington Highway, Rockdale police spokesman Michael Camp said.

Fire responders used foam to contain the runoff. "Minimal" flames were visible, Camp said.

Residences were evacuated one mile north of Old Covington Highway to West Avenue inside Conyers city limits.

A chemical reaction with some buckets of chlorine powder pellets on one pallet is believed have caused the fire, Camp said.

CHEMICAL MIXTURE DELAYS DOUGLASS PARK POOL OPENING
Tags: us_MO, public, release, response, chlorine, pool_chemicals

Unfortunately, Douglass Family Aquatic Center and sprayground will not open today (Friday, June 3) in order to allow the Columbia Fire Department time to clean the pool chemical tanks. A vendor that provides us with pool chemicals made a mistake on a delivery today. The new driver accidently started putting acid in the liquid chlorine tank but quickly caught his mistake. In order to clean the tank of the mixture of chlorine and acid requires that the facility be closed and needs the specialized services of the Columbia Fire Department's Haz-Mat team.

This incident only involves the actual Douglass pool and sprayground and has no impact on the rest of the park.

The sprayground will open at 6:00 am on Saturday, June 4 and the Douglass Family Aquatic Center will open later Saturday morning at 11:00 am as scheduled.

FIVE CHEMICAL GODOWNS GUTTED BY FIRE IN HYDERABAD
Tags: India, industrial, fire, response, unknown_chemical

A major fire broke out at five chemical godowns in Hyderabad"s Dhulapalli area on Saturday evening. Around five fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the flames.
A spark in the exhaust pipe of one of the godowns is said to be the main cause behind the inferno.
The godowns have drums filled with Methyl Dichloride, which is making it difficult for the fire fighters to bring flames under control.
No causalities have been reported so far. Further details are awaited.
