MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) -- Hazmat crews were called to a chemical spill in south east Madison on Thursday afternoon.

According to the Madison Fire Department, the spill happened at Pelliteri Waste Systems. Five people fell ill and one person was taken to the hospital. Officials said the people felt nauseated and were coughing from fumes that were released from an unknown chemical within the plant.

According to officials, most of the people were treated at the scene. One person was transported to St. Mary‰??s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Hazmat crews were unable to find the cause.

NEW HAVEN LABORATORY EVACUATED FOR FEAR OF HAZARDOUS LIQUID
Tags: us_CT, laboratory, release, response, ag_chems

NEW HAVEN >> A laboratory in New Haven‰??s Prospect Hill neighborhood was evacuated Thursday after an unknown liquid was discovered in the basement.

The liquid was found leaking from a package at the Johnson Laboratory, 123 Huntington St., Acting Fire Chief Matthew Marcarelli said at the scene. It was later identified as formic acid, and responders poured soda ash on it to contain it.

No one was hurt in the incident, and the liquid didn‰??t pose a danger to the public or the neighborhood, Marcarelli said. He said crews had contained it within one part of the basement.

QUICK ACTION STOPS BLAST

When a flash fire ripped through the building of a Whitewater black-powder manufacturer on Monday, an injured employee kept the situation from getting even worse.

Instead of running from the flames after he was burned, Greg Ziegler had the wherewithal to get on a forklift and use it to move the finished product away from the fire to keep the building from exploding, according to his friend and former co-worker, Tom Butchko of Whitewater.

Land‰??s End Fire Protection District Chief Brian Lurvey and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives spokeswoman Lisa Meiman confirmed Ziegler‰??s actions.

‰??He was able to get it down the road and keep it from combusting,‰?? said Lurvey.

The fire, which was ruled an accident after an investigation by the ATF, occurred when Ziegler was producing black-powder replacements, which are used for muzzleloading and other shooting sports. According to the state of Florida‰??s business records, Ziegler is listed as the president of American Pioneer Powder, Inc., which is licensed by the ATF to manufacture the ammunition at 1475 Blair Road.

Federal investigators said the fire was a result of flash ignition, which causes a sudden, fast-moving fire when a mixture of air and particles in the air combust.

EXPERTS IDENTIFY MARION SPRAYED CHEMICAL AS A FUNGICIDE
Tags: us_IA, public, follow-up, environmental, ag_chems, pesticides

MARION, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) - Testing identified a chemical found sprayed in a Marion neighborhood Tuesday qualitatively as a fungicide. That's according to a release from the Marion Fire Department.

Marion Fire released the information Thursday evening, and said they're working closely with the Linn County Hazardous Materials Team, Linn County Emergency Management, Iowa State Department of Agriculture and the state and county public health departments.

Testing went on to show the fungicide has components similar to that of Stratego, a chemical commonly used by farmers to eliminate vegetative pests.

The Iowa Department of Public health stated the direct exposure to lawns or vegetation after 12 hours of the application of the pesticide is not expected to have any adverse health effects on people.

The Department also said any exposed hard surface should be cleaned with soapy water, and all clothes and bare skin that came into contact with it should be washed.

CHEMICAL MIXTURE FORCES WEST METRO HOTEL EVACUATION
Tags: us_MN, public, release, injury, unknown_chemical

A potentially dangerous chemical mixture forced a Metro hotel to evacuate Thursday afternoon.
Authorities evacuated the Ramada Plymouth hotel on the 2700 block of Annapolis Lane.

Investigators are working to learn more about who mixed to chemicals and under what circumstances. Attached to the hotel is a Plymouth Playhouse which had to reschedule a show, and a Green Mill restaurant which had to close its doors for a few hours.

"I started smelling the chemicals. Then the siren started going off and firefighters were banging on my door to evacuate me and everybody else," said 18-year-old Haley Wolf.

Employees who did not feel comfortable going on camera described the smell as strong. Some of them described their throats hurting.

COURT: WORKERS HURT IN EXPLOSION CAN‰??T SUE FOR NEGLIGENCE

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ‰?? The Connecticut Supreme Court says two workers injured in a power plant explosion that killed six other people in 2010 cannot sue a contractor for damages for alleged negligence.

Justices issued a 6-1 decision Wednesday saying contractor O&G Industries of Torrington is immune from the lawsuit under state law because the contractor bore the cost of workers‰?? compensation benefits paid to the two subcontractor workers.

The court rejected arguments by the workers, James Thompson and James McVay, that O&G Industries passed on the cost of workers‰?? compensation insurance to subcontractors.

The explosion occurred during construction of the Kleen Energy power plant in Middletown. Authorities said crews were using natural gas at high pressure to clean out pipes and something sparked an explosion. The state later banned the ‰??gas blow‰?? practice.

EXPERTS SAY PROPANE EXPLOSION DEATHS ARE RARE, COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED
Tags: us_OK, public, explosion, death, propane

TAHLEQUAH, Okla.-- Propane experts say the deadly explosion at a Tahlequah home likely could have been prevented.

Neighbors say the man was renovating the house.

Propane experts say when remodeling or doing any work on a home equipped with propane, precautions are necessary.

"Anytime there's an interruption in service any time to change an appliance out a customer needs to call us because you've interrupted the service,‰?? said Jimmy Gower, Chief of Operations LaFerry's Propane in Cherokee County.

The ATF is investigating. Fire investigators say these explosions rarely cause a fire but the damage is often extensive.

CREWS INVESTIGATE CHEMICAL LEAK ON MARVIN GRIFFIN ROAD
Tags: us_GA, transportation, release, response, hydrochloric_acid

Hazmat crews and other emergency responders were called to the industrial area on Marvin Griffin Road after a chemical leak this morning.
Fire department spokeswoman Dee Griffin said a truck leaked hydrochloric acid in a trail about 3,000 feet long and 30 inches wide.
Deputies have closed off an area of the road while crews work to clean the area. The truck company‰??s cleanup crew, First Call Environment, arrived on the scene about 9 a.m. to access the issue and begin the cleanup.
Surrounding companies have been told to shelter in place during cleaning.

HAZARDOUS LEAK AT COMPANY ON AEROJET CAMPUS IS CONTAINED

A small chemical leak at a chemical company on the Aerojet Rocketdyne campus in Rancho Cordova was contained Tuesday night.

Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews were called about 10 p.m. to AMPAC Fine Chemicals at Aerojet, which is along Folsom Boulevard between Rancho Cordova and Folsom. Firefighters found a leaking cylinder in a remote location on the Aerojet grounds.

The cylinder was leaking anhydrous hydrogen bromide. The chemical is described by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association as a colorless gas with an irritating odor. Long-term breathing exposure to low concentrations or short-term breathing exposure to high concentrations can result in adverse health effects, including severe irritation of nose and upper respiratory tract.

Anhydrous hydrogen bromide is said to be used to make other chemicals, according to a NOAA chemical data sheet.

Working with AMPAC and Aerojet, firefighter hazardous material members donned special safety gear and entered the ‰??hot zone‰?? to try to fix the leaking cylinder, according to a Metro Fire press release.

Unable to cap the leak, the cylinder was instead moved by truck to an isolated building that was equipped with a chemical filter. The leak was contained inside the building, allowing evacuations of the Aerojet campus to be lifted.

The cylinder will be placed in a secure container to be transported off-site and destroyed, firefighters said Tuesday night. The forklift and truck used to move the cylinder were to be cleaned to remove any lingering chemical.

CHEMICAL SPILL IN TOWED JEEP CLOSES PART OF ITHACA STREET
Tags: us_NY, transportation, release, response, illegal

A small amount of hazardous chemicals spilled inside or near a Jeep Wednesday afternoon, causing state and local officials to briefly close part of Cherry Street in Ithaca.

Ithaca police were called at 3:15 p.m. to a reported vehicle fire that possibly involved chemicals after smoke was seen. However, there was no fire.

The scene was initially reported to to be a mobile meth lab, according to a press release issued Wednesday evening by Officer Jamie Williamson of the Ithaca Police Department.

The spilled liquid was described as "volatile and hazardous in the nature," in the press release. State police Contaminated Crime Scene Emergency Response Team (CCSERT) was unable to identify the chemical involved according to the release.

"We have confirmed what has occurred was some illegal dumping of some hazardous material," said Ithaca Police Sgt. Kevin Slattery.

The Linn County Hazardous Material Team was called to investigate Tuesday night after several people called 911 about a white substance on cars and houses.

Officials believed at first the substance was a broadleaf herbicide, or weed killer, that may have come from a crop duster plane.

Fire officials said it's not much different from what you would put on your lawn, except that it has an extra sticky substance added to make it cling to plants.

However, Marion Fire Chief Deb Krebill said Wednesday afternoon that additional tests have indicated the substance might be a fungicide. That's chemical also sprayed on crops to control fungus.

'SMALL DUST EXPLOSION' REPORTED AT SOUTH BALTIMORE PLANT
Tags: us_MD, industrial, explosion, response, dust, water_treatment

dust explosion caused a South Baltimore plant to evacuate, along with the nearby wastewater treatment plant Tuesday morning, a city fire department spokesman said.

The "small dust explosion," occurred a in venting system at the plant near the Patapsco Waste Water Treatment Plant on Asiatic Avenue, said spokesman Sam Johnson.

No fire was reported and no one was injured, he said, but firefighters responded at 9:45 a.m. and were on standby while the facility's ventilation system was cleared.

The incident occurred at the Synagro facility, which converts sludge from the neighboring Patapsco Waste Water Treatment Plant into pellets for fuel and agriculture, Baltimore Department of Public Works spokesman Jeffrey Raymond said.

The waste water treatment plant was evacuated as a precaution, Raymond said.

"What we had there was a power outage," said Layne Baroldi, director of legislative and regulatory affairs at Synagro.

With the power outage, there was smoldering within the facility where the waste water residuals dry out, and it created a smoke, he said. He said there was never any danger to the community.
