I think it's really important that students learn about disinfectants--contact time is important (that's why ethanol is a poor choice for surface disinfection--evaporates too quickly), some need to be made up the day of use to be effective (10% Clorox solution), and not every disinfectant works on every biological....

I like the chart from Iowa State's Food Safety group along with their powerpoint
http://www.cfsph.iastate.edu/Disinfection/Assets/CharacteristicsSelectedDisinfectants.pdf

http://www.cfsph.iastate.edu/Disinfection/Assets/Disinfection101.pdf

There are also videos on YouTube regarding how to work safely and properly in a BSC; while BSL1 procedures are likely to be performed on the bench, if there are contamination concerns they may need to work in a BSC for results rather than safety...

ABSA.org has a number of menus for "Training Tools"--a nice video on how to use an autoclave with appropriate PPE, etc.. I wouldn't send the students to absa.org but you might want to peruse the offerings and select what you think would be relevant, adding them to the list.

Not sure if your institution has an IBC or receives NIH funding, but you might want to talk a bit about rDNA and how even if the work is BSL-1, they may need to have it reviewed, even/especially if they are in grad school...

Hi Ralph,

This is a list of resources that I have collected. The Dow Chemical Company's video provides a nice introduction to the differences between Biosafety Level 1 and Biosafety Level 2. It also describes good microbiological practices.

Resources

=B7 Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) 5th Edition (BMBL) http://www.cdc.gov/biosafety/publications/bmbl5/index.htm

=B7 Biological Risk Assessment Template provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention http://www.cdc.gov/biosafety/publications/BiologicalRiskAssessmentWorksheet.pdf

=B7 Pathogen Safety Data Sheets (PSDSs) provided by the Public Health Agency of Canada http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/lab-bio/res/psds-ftss/index-eng.php

=B7 Risk Group Classification for Infectious Agents provided by the American Biological Safety Association (ABSA) http://www.absa.org/riskgroups/

=B7 Recognizing the Biosafety Levels Training provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) http://www.cdc.gov/training/quicklearns/biosafety/

=B7 Biological Hazards Lab Safety Module provided by the Dow Chemical Company http://safety.dow.com/en/safety-courses/specialized-topics

I hope this helps.

As of this morning, I have a "pop training" now scheduled for Friday for biology students conducting BSL-1 level undergrad research. Their future biolab work is entirely unpredictable, so I'd like to include a list of key references they might want to know about in the future. I'm pretty well covered on the chemical safety side in this regard, but I wonder if anyone on the list has put together a list of 4 or 5 key safety references that beginning bio lab workers should be aware of. I know about the large professional volumes like BMBL, but am looking for something more friendly for this audience. Something like "SACL for the Biolab".

Thanks for any help with this.
