Re: death of Norman Steere

I think that several older members of DCHAS would be interested in the recent death of Norman V. Steere. I had collaborated with him on some perchlorate safety issues in the early 1970s. He later was used as a consultant on chemical safety by Macalester College.

He died on December 9, 2016 at age 89. He lived in the Stillwater, MN area.

Norman was born in 1927 in Michigan, and received a B.S. in Civil Engineering at the University of Michigan. He became interested in laboratory safety and worked at the Michigan State Health Department, the University of Minnesota, and at the 3M Company before becoming an independent safety consultant.

For many years he edited the Safety in the Chemical Laboratory column in the Journal of Chemical Education; these were later printed in two volumes. He was the editor for two editions of the Handbook of Laboratory Safety.
